How do the bodyshops get the shine on the car panel ?

IS it through using a rotary or has it got something to do with the lacquer ?

I was under the impression you couldn't use a rotary after painting ?

Reason I ask is my local bodyshop has done a wing on one of my cars and it looks quite dull. He is using autosmart platinum by hand to 'polish' it to get a shine ....

The best 'shine' is one that's never been touched - the lacquer sets in exactly the position it flowed out wet. However, while shiny, it's likely to be textured. If there's an unacceptable amount of texture it will need to be flatted and/or polished to a smoother profile, and a good polishing system will leave the gloss level very high.

You can use a rotary polisher soon after painting - exactly how soon depends on the clearcoat. Some it's as soon as they're cool, others need an overnight stand, etc.

Very odd to be polishing a fresh finish by hand, though. Not sure what that's about...

sounds like rotary used at too fast a setting on fresh paint
common problem in many mainstream bodyshops esp one that pay bonus
I suspect hes hand polishing to try to fill in any swirls as a quick fix
