It's a nasty looking cut and obvious swelling from the picture and it also throws out the question of open single seated racing being safe. With Harry Surtees tragic racing incident and Felipe having an incident with debis (potentially from Barachellos car) it begs the question that the cars which are designed for major accidents structurally are still operated by someone who is exposed to the elements and such things which can affect the safety of both driver and the competitors.

I am not a Massa fan but I do hope he recovers soon. It has been reported that he will not be fit to race tomorrow which is a shame.

Eric for once I hope you are wrong. (not just speaking as a huge fan of Massa).

I know this was a very nasty one - and I've been following it all day, but I was under the illusion that he was due an op, would miss tomorrow - but stood a good chance to be back in the driving seat pretty soon.

I think I'll agree with you there Eric. Massa was very lucky there. A few centimetres in the wrong direction and that was going square through the visor. Even if he recovers physically before the end of the season, that will be a mountain to climb psychologically.

Strangely F1Fanatic.co.uk has an article from last week debating closed cockpits http://www.f1fanatic.co.uk/2009/07/22/closed-cockp... Bit spooky really with the loss of Surtees last week.
