help i have a rattle on my 1997 e36 328i sport. at 1st i thought is was a heat shield around the exhaust but that seems fine. it sounds like a grating almost but is only at certain points and is rteally annoying it sounds like its coming from around the prop shaft about half a foot back from the great stick under neath

please help any suggestions or common faults would be gratefully recvd

thanks

tim

Check the gearbox to exhaust support bracket...They tend to corrode around the exhaust and wear out and eventually break......This causes buzzing, chattering and so on

I had the catalytic converter breakdown on my E36. The ceramic plates in the cat failed and were in pieces in the exhaust and rattled at certain revs..

It rattled for a few months until the pieces finally block the pipe and engine power was lost.

If you need any parts I know of a very cheap BMW breakers in Blackburn, PM me if you want his details.

Just got myself a set of 328i sport BBS staggered alloys, 3 with decent tyres, all for center caps, in great nick for £50 from him.

Yes this sounds the same I could accelerate up to a point then there was just nothing, it was like bouncing off the rev limiter. The cat was replaced and I got my power back smile the old cat when shaken sounded like a tin full of broken bottles.
