I am seriously in danger of tkaing my cycling a bit too seriously !! What was a ride to work 1/2 a week has become 30 miles a day at least 4 times a week plus spin class saturday morning !

I went for an off road hoon on saturday down in swanage and loved it... and as a result want to get out more and more and have been looking at systems to monitor and map where i am.

The one i have come across is the Garmin Edge 705 - weighting in at £300 it is not cheap but does everything you could need. Has anyone used this system who can tell me a bit more about it ? Does it work off road for example ?

Any one else use any other systems that they would recommend ?

Have one, love it.

So does my brother who is geek extraordinaire.

Also have it set up with my powermeters and it's replaced both the SRM and Powertap headunits in training (though still race with the SRM one).

I have an Edge 305 and it's excellent as a logger, although my cadence sensor keeps eating batteries for some reason. You can plan a route with something like bikehike and upload it to the 305, so I suspect you can do the same with the 705.

I did a write up of what HRM/Bike/Data logger I use (similar requirement) here http://vinf.net/2009/06/29/biking-for-geeks/

the instamapper app I use doesn't do actual navigation but route logging is very good and can spits out files that work with Google Earth etc.

example output here :
