2003.5 was the facelift.
LED rear lights
smaller boot handle
No concerns with recalls.
Options to have are
19" wheels adds £1k still.
Sat Nav again adds £1k still.
I would say heated seats are a must have on a cab.
Harmon Kardon is a nice option, as is bluetooth.
Everything else is just a bonus really.

!9's for sure ( can't think there're many M3 cabs on 18's )
Sat nav yes but get an updated nav disc if the previous owner hasn't already. The system seems a bit dated now but still does the job well.
Heated seats without a doubt.
I would also go for a manual rather than SMG. I had both and reckon the manual is more rewarding but obviously that's a personal choice. If SMG make sure software is up to date.
I'd be boring and go for silver grey or carbon black just because you'll have more choice. Plus it'll be easier to sell on.
Finally, take your time, there's quite a few around so there's no need to rush in.
I can hear the exhaust note in a tunnel now!

Nav/TV is a must, should be the dvd version not cd based.
LED rear lights, some 2003 cars dont seem to have them.
19" wheels with Pilot sport or similar tyres- when i was looking, i saw a lot of cars on budget rubber. Some argue that 18"s ride better & while i would accept that, they look cack.
Harmon kardon worth having plus 6 cd changer.
SMG a must for me, really is the business.
Front center armrest very useful option to have.
Electric folding mirrors, again useful.
The longer boot handle was never added to the cabs.
Running in service done on time is a must or you'll never sell it when the time comes.
Try to find a car under BMW warranty, worth its weight in gold. There are a few cars that still have it.
Fitted tracker - it used to be impossibe to get insured without one, not sure if its still the same.
You just need to find a car with your preferred interior/exterior colour options, along with the factory options you require, with a history & mileage thats acceptable to you, within your budget.
Good luck!
Edited to add: Bi xenons std after 2001(i think), as is PDC, auto lights/wipers. Strut brace std from mid 2002.

This was my list when I was looking:
M3
Must have/be:
Black or Silver Grey paint
16:9 Navigation
SMG gearbox
Red/Orange/Lime green/Cream leather interior
Harmon Kardon
Should have/be:
Sunroof if coupe
Facelift (LED rear lights)
19" alloys
Under £14,000
Under 60,000 miles
Can be:
Coupe
Cabrio
I found my perfect car a few weeks ago. The SMG box is superb.
