Metal detectors - what to buy?
Discussion
Strewth! I did not realise how Cheap they could be purchased for. I guess at those sort of prices it would be worth the purchase, then after finding the ring, going on to find other treasures, thus paying for it's self.

Ooh, serious ones! North Essex would be handier though! You're very welcome to borrow mine - but you're a distance away.
To be honest, buying one (as you originally suggested) is the best bet as it's a moderately useful device to have.
This one from Amazon would do the trick...

Thanks NDA - might just get that. I wasn't sure how much one to do the job would cost.
ETA: I could get one of these today - any good? http://www.screwfix.com/prods/35724/Security/Metal...
What's the general difference between round ones and pointy ones?

I have a Tesoro Sand Shark, pulse detector, fully waterproof to a depth of lots of meters. WOuld recommend this if your drive is underwater.
Probably not a bad idea if planning to ever use it on the beach anyway.A few months back I managed to lose my wedding ring while on a trip to the Farne Islands. Luckily it was on Inner Farne rather than over the side of the boat. I was rather gutted as it has been in the family since 1869, and returned a few weeks later with a metal detector hired from HSS more in hope than expectation. Against all the odds we found it! (cue a few celebratory pints when back on the mainland). I can therefore confirm that the detectors hired by HSS are fit for purpose!
