Who are you using? Just had my renewal through from Greenlight and its not pretty at just over £700. I refuse to be over 30 and be paying that much for insurance lol. A bit of tweaking on the comparison sites got it to just over £600. I'm guessing some of the brokers will be more specialised but as you have to spend ages on the phone with them I'd like to narrow it down to a small selection to ring.

Any recommendations?

Bell were cheapest for me. Came out at £1,150 or thereabouts. I had paid £575 for my last renewal on my previous 330d - so pretty much bang on double.

I looked the other day and for me at 30 the best I got on go compare was £680.

I used to insure my E36 M3 Evo with A plan, can't remember how much though.

I've just reinsured e46 cab with Kwik Fit for £480. Nice part of Yorkshire, no live points and 8yrs no claims.

As Scotty said, try KwikFit (No jokes please!). They are merely a brokerage. I'm insured on a Z4M Roadster fully comp with Protected No Claims Bonus with a £750 Excess through the Norwich Union for £310 pa.

Included in that £310 is the annual premium of about £30 to insure the first £500 of my £750 excess (Yes, strange but true...). So if I have an "at fault accident" I initially pay the £750 excess to Norwich Union but then claim £500 of that back from KwikFit.

Kwikfit also throw in a free MOT - to be used within 12 months of policy start date - worth £55..... A pretty good deal methinks as I was paying £650 on my last 3.0 Z4....

Try them.
