I've seen various comments before above top speed of M5 de-restricted and a friend who has one says they can push 200mph but become unstable aerodynamically.

But haven't seen anything about M3 top speed if de-restricted (not tuned).

The owners manual says that top speed with M drivers package is 280kmh or 174mph.

Just curious

They're geared to 188 iirc, everywhere I've read seems to suggest 180ish is the max

Given that I achieved the right side of 170 in my E36, I would think this is more than feasible yes

My M6 is restricted to the usual 155 but i managed to get a 170 indicated.
As we know the speedo underreading gets worse as the speed increases.
It is more likely that your speed was also indicated and also incorrect

There is a video of an M6 doing 206 mph GPS verified but it does have a few mods (exhaust, remap etc). I haven't had a chance to push mine anywhere near that unfortunately.

The M3 would easily crack 180 mph without the limiter I would think.

My E46CS over-reads by 10% all the way up.. roughly... which keeps you n the safe side of speed cameras.. but it does pull 140mph indicated in 4th down the hanger straight at Silverstone.. so 180+ is achievable if it will pull the gearing.. vmax will be in 5th not 6th... is my guess.. but never maxed mine out to date.. cornering hard is much more challenging.. going into maggots / beckets at 120mph.. play time...!
