XJR 4.2 - part ex value
Discussion
Good news: I'm going to check out a Jag approved 07 XKR on Saturday.
Bad news: this could be bye-bye dearly beloved XJR
I'm fairly busy at work right now and what with other people's weddings and goodness knows what else I think I'll have to PX the car. I've not done this for years and am concerned about getting ripped off. I filled out the Parker's Guide valuation form with mileage and options and it came back as [shocked face] £15,185 for PX.
Question to all you wise folks is how do I handle the negotiation for the PX. Are they likely to value it like Parkers or is it likely to be less? I checked out the XKR and they are asking for a price a bit lower than Parkers Franchised Dealer value (adjusted for mileage and options). Should I just suck it up and try a private sale for a few extra ££? It's a really nice one (see my profile link for a pic etc), but I am also concerned about the time it takes to sell a big car these days. Is spec as important to other people as it was me?
Any advice welcome, especially dealer tricks! Sweaty palms moment.

What really matters is how much it'll cost you to change. If you get a poor offer for the XJ, but do a deal on the new car then that's just as good as the other way round - better px but not shifting on price of the replacement
Most main dealers with several branches churn thier high value stock round every few weeks to give the impression that cars are selling and to expose a certain vehicle to different market locations.
I've watched an overpriced X350 appear and dissapear almost like magic round a certain dealers sites recently.
Any salesman will say - big expensive saloon Sir? Cost to run Sir? Road tax Sir? Price of petrol? Can't shift them nowadays Sir - even though he's making a good living selling almost identical cars. Cue the usual phone calls to see if he can persuade another trader to underwrite the deal, hushed conversations in the managers office to "see what he can do".
If it's a good one I'd bite the extra hassle bullet and try to sell it privately, another couple of grand in your pocket is always a good thing IMO.

The Parkers valuations are useless IMHO. The Dealership will use a choice of two professional guides- Glasses and CAP. Glasses valuations are slightly higher than CAPs' so expect somewhere in between. However, earlier at the start of this recession these guides weren't keeping up with the falls, I don't know how they are fairing now?
As Jaguar Steve has said, it is all about the cost to change. You may get a poor price for the part-ex, but a scorching deal (to you) on the XKR?
IMHO if you want a cracking deal on the XKR, go there with no trade in. As you have said, dealers aren't having the best time at the moment, your car is probably too old to go on the forecourt of a franchised dealer (it would have to sold with a Jaguar warranty and fully serviced) so therefore they are probably going to send it to an auction, so expect a low part-ex price.
A private sale is hassle, no guarantees. But your XJR WILL sell privately, but only for the right price (if it doesn't sell in 2-4 weeks it's over priced.)
Get a couple of trade in quotes from some Jag dealers telling them you are thinking of trading against an 2007 XKR, if they are all saying the same thing you will know that is the price.
If you don't want the hassle and you love the XKR, don't leave without securing a good trade in price and purchase price, do the deal there or walk away, you'll get a call back.
Good luck.
PS If you do sell her private I'd be quite interested in your XJR.

£15K ??? I'd be amazed if you get offered anything approaching that by dealer, mainly because it's really becoming too old for them to stick on the forecourt of a franchised jag dealership.
By comparison, I was offered 7K for my 03 XJR, albeit with 110K on the clock.
The car I was enquiring about was an 04 plate XJR that the guy was selling at £15K with about 45K on the clock.
He also said he'd just had a trade on from his local dealership which was another 2003 XJR with 81K on the clock... he paid £8100 to the dealer for it.
There's a 155K 2003 XJR around somewhere for £8995 from a trader.
Yours is a nice spec, but then they all are really, it might help it sell a bit quicker but doesn't add anything to the value , well nothing appreciable anyways.
I'm guessing that when you ask for a trade in they'll offer you £11.5K at the dealership, maybe a bit less.
let us know, I'm interested to see how the dealers value them.

I really appreciate the honest views, thanks. I see what you mean by 'price to change'. To keep you updated, I am now looking at a 1 owner March 2008 08 car with no options (has front parking aid, but that may have been standard). Seems good value, ridiculously low mileage, and / but from an independent. After a phone chat I sent full details of my XJR for a vague PX valuation, to save the journey if he and I are too far off.
My XJR is here:
http://www.lonelyjanet.co.uk/xjr/xjr.html
I bought it via PistonHeads Jaguar forum in 2007, so any die-hard Jag fans with a serious interest should let me know! Keep it in the family and all that.
I'll keep you posted on the dealer situation for your interest. I am consumed with wonder on how the 5.0 XKR will further effect 4.2 XKR values over the next 6 months.

I've been offered (subject to appraisals on both sides of the equation):
£14,000 px value against a £45,000 car (2008 08 XKR with no options, one owner, 6,000 miles, Full J history and balance of manufactures warranty). So price to change is £31,000. (My plate not included).
Could have been worse!

WOW! I was guessing £10-12k.£14,000 px value against a £45,000 car (2008 08 XKR with no options, one owner, 6,000 miles, Full J history and balance of manufactures warranty). So price to change is £31,000. (My plate not included).

When you say 'no options' what do you mean? If you are worried about the 5.0ltr cars affecting your residuals then buying a car with no options isn't helping your cause. Jag did however make more 'options' standard at the end of 2007, so asd long as you have the big wheels and upgraded leather the rest should be ok.
£45k for a nice 08 XKR 4.2 sounds very reasonable, and though your XJR is undoubtedly nice I think you will struggle to get £14k for it privately. The 64,000 dollar question however is what the dealer will sell you the XKR for, with no trade in. Until you know that you can't tell whether the 14k is good bad or indifferent.
SOME TIME LATER...
Having checked out the ads on Pistonheads, I now reckon that £45k is probably about the average - these cars are stunning but must be dropping faster than I thought. There is indeed a high mile '03 XJR up for £8995 from a dealer but without physically seeing it who knows what its like? You have absolutely nothing to lose by advertising your car on PH and Auto Trader (other than the Auto Trader fee). It does look good - for me it ticks every box except that I am not a grey maple fan. If you got £14k privately and then negotiated the XKR to £42.5k you are quids in. By the way what is the spec on the XKR?
Above all stay calm and don't be panicked into a decision. There is ALWAYS another one.

It's got all the right kit - 20" Sentas, front + rear parking aid, premium sound. But those appear standard kit (poss front sensors were not), which is why i say no options fitted.
Now, in parallel (don't laugh) I am courting a main dealer for the 5.0 XKR. He's got one for just under £60k with 2k miles on the clock. He's offered me £12k in principle for mine, so quite a fat price to change, £48k. That is, just using these numbers for now, £17k difference - is the 5.0 worth £17k to me? Perhaps not... that's a lot of lolly.
I cannot find any 2008 08 XKRs for less than £45k, so for the data i have it is the minimum price, not the average. (I want a post Jul 2007 car so i get the integrated arial not that old fashioned electric one, plus the piano black with aluminium facia).
But, no doubt if I went with cold hard cash I'd get 1 or 2k off the price, which would make selling for ~£14 privately a sensibel thing to do. I think its worth more than that privately, but only to someone who is looking for a top spec and a low mileage, which not every one is.
XKRs are going to fall in value faster than my XJ, so time is on my side I guess. I am just getting a little over excited. And why not!

Selling privately is such a pain in the wotsit, though. When I got rid of my 330i I sold it at work, which is ok, but the whole tyre-kicking, joyride brigade, insurance issues - they all concern me. Stress!
You may be interested to know I have negotiated a revised offer re: the 5.0 XKR. Now they will give me £13,500. I am wondering if I can honestly get much more than that privately. And their 2k mls demonstrator 5.0 XKR is the cheapest (it's under £60k) I have seen. Would need to put some to finance, though which is a shame - the quote is nearly £5k in interest over the term. But, 503 rampaging English horses... And that cool twiddly gear knob.
I think I need to go for a drink tonight. I will probably be found huddled over a calculator, talking gibberish to myself in the corner of the pub. Say hi if you see me.

You only live once - go for the 5 litre one. Then post up some pics. The pleasure will remain long after the finance is forgotten.

I have sold quite a number of cars privately with no issues at all - you have a very nice unit which is going to attract a higher class of buyer. It's not a tyrekickers car and my hunch is you will get a lot of interest and the first genuine punter will snap your hand off. All the same, the 13.5k offer must be tempting.

Well, I have made up my mind. I just phoned up the dealer with the 5.0 XKR, David, and told him I didn’t want to buy his glorious 2009 car. It was like breaking up with someone. I had to say “it’s not you, it’s me”. He said “there’s someone else isn’t there? Isn't there?! ISN'T THERE?!!”. I had to concede I was going for the cheaper bit of stuff. I felt dirty. He understood.
Seriously, I think the 4.2 makes more sense. £15 cheaper, it's an 08 car, and then I can justify changing it for a 5.0 in 24 months time.
What helped make up my mind was showing my better half pictures of the two cars. To her, of course they appeared identical. She chose one of the two and I asked her why. She said the stone wall in the photo backdrop of her favoured choice was nicer than the brick wall in the photo backdrop of the other. I shook my weary head in shame.
Anyway, it's going to be a privilege to care for the 4.2. Thanks to everyone for your advice and encouragement, I do appreciate it (otherwise I would be consigned to salesmen and stone wall admirers, and no doubt be banging my head against one or both).

Ahhh, you should never have asked her opinion.
I told mine I was thinking of a newer car. Apparently I have to finish my house extension, save some money, pay off some of the mortgage first , etc... etc...
I've now decided not to tell her again. I think she'll much prefer the surprise when I just turn up in a new car.
I keep telling myself that anyways!

yep. It's going for £14,500 inc plate (against the £45k XKR). Going to see it Saturday. No time like the present!
