A guy who was off yesterday has come in today after being diagnosed with swine flu! He has a tamiflu prescription so it's obviously genuine.

We all work on a contract basis so no sick pay (hence him coming in!) but everyone is a bit miffed that he has risked everyones health for the sake of a few hundred quid!

Best way to handle it? I think he should be asked to go home.

Group walk out..! An afternoon away from work to prove your point, will be better than several days off with Swine Flu. I'm sure the management will send him packing, if the rest of the office is on walk out..!

Or

Have a quiet word with him / Management.
Face masks for the office is quite subtle as well...

a bit late for that, no?
how about a sacking on gross misconduct grounds?
I'd rather have someone leaving a wet floor with no yellow sign than this. And the former is very much against health and safety.

The best bet for anyone with symptoms is to stay away from work. The advice for people who actually have it is to NOT go to work anyway.....

But that said, just because he has Tamiflu doesn't mean that he actually has it. There is sufficient evidence for the local GP to issue a prescription (which is occurring without a consultation these days) and you could probably lie about this anyway. I am hearing from places where the work ethic isnt as high that sickness due to 'swine flu' is chronic, but this because people are taking lots of sickies....

In the end, my opinion is that its just a bad cold. You might get it, you might not. Its not some deadly disease that is going to kill 50% of the population and plunge the world into a post-apocalyptic nightmare....

Welcome to my world! Happens all the time - working in a show orchestra or something, if somebody gets ill they're still going to come in as getting a dep can be hard, and "no worky no pay" frown. So you end up picking up all sorts of germs...

I'm not freaking out over it as I think the wife has had ot over the past week anyway. As said, her symptoms were those of a mild flu. Two days in bed feeling bad and a temperature that never went over 37.5.

It just seems a bit selfish and several colleagues are none too impressed!

Oh noes!
Go to homebase, get some red paint paint a red cross on your door.

Wait for this guy.

Bloody hell man its the flu not Ebola, you wouldn't react the same way in the winter to everyone who sniffs and coughs would you?

we had a guy off work friday and as we were discussing swine flu i said if i aught it from anyone, it'd be him [2 kids in primary school, wife works for a GP, he's always ill].

cue yesterday he comes in eyes streaming, coughing and sneezing all over the place, aches & pains etc. he came in again today....

doubt its swine flu, but still pretty annoying knowing i'm going to catch cold this week.

I'd be inclined to believe that anyone who stays a course of Tamiflu has something nasty, even if it is just "normal" flu.

It's not a very pleasant drug.

All these people saying it's not that bad are getting on my tits. I am imumosupressed my wife is pregnant and I have a 20 month old at home. So that is my entire family at risk of dying from it. Not serious you say, fk off you selfish barstards it may not kill you but it could very well kill me and mine.
If you are healthy, bully for you not everybody is, so killing them by being a tt and coming to work is OK then.
I'm not panicing as I know there is fk all I can do about and if I get it, I get it and only then will I find out if it going to be fatal. I would however prefer if people did not load the dice against me by coming to work whilst suffering from it.

Perhaps you should mention to a senior manager that any employee who gets sick because they allowed a clearly sick employee to come into work, is free to sue the employer if they get sick because of it.

Then see how long it is before he's sent home.

If he has it now and has been in the office for the week running up to symptoms showing, then there is little point in sending him home. He'll have been infectious for some time before he showed symptoms.

I am led to believe that you are not infectious until you are ill with it.
