So I've recieved a strange message to my mobile, from a number of "007-Licence" with the message "All is known mate".

Obviously I can't reply as "007-Licence" is not a proper number.

I've had a quick google but can find nothing relating to this "007-Licence" so I'm a bit confused now.

How can someone send a text to my phone without using a number but with "007-Licence" instead?

What is "known"? I wish i knew as I'd love to be some kind of mysterious MI6 double agent or maybe up to no good that I'm hding from those around me. But I'm neither LOL

Any clues anyone?

Checked your phone's address book for an entry that a mate might have snuck in there?

If you have a connection to the mobile network, like any of the text message service companies do, you can send messages with the originator set to anything you choose, either 16 digits or 11 alphanumeric characters.

So yes, you can send prank texts to your friends with other people's mobile numbers or names as the source wink

Checked that one straight away, but there is no number on the text, so I can't even create a message to reply!

Ok, but this wouldn't be available to any joe bloggs would it, it would need to be someone technically working in one of the telco's, wouldn't it?

Just because you can't see the number, doesn't mean it isn't there. You should still be able to press reply and despatch a message.

Can't do that, the reply button is greyed out on the phone when viewing this message!

Thing is:

I can't think of anyone that works in a Telco type place
I don't have any enemies.... or friends :-)
I can't see any reason to use "007-Licence" as a made up sender, that seems so random.
And then the message itself means nothing!

It's a good wind-up though as I like a bit of a puzzle.

You've been scammed. Receiving that text probably cost you £1.50.

Or not.

You can do this with Skype so it could be anyone who uses that

Well, all those ringtone companies or SMS chat lines etc have systems that send SMS via SMS "aggregator" companies. It's not (technically) hard to get an account at one of these aggregators - and very little checking is done, especially if the account is not doing billed texts.

VOIP companies can do this too, with the CLI on a phonecall. They are asked to sign an agreement stating they can use the specified number, but obviously this is open to abuse until someone complains.

When my friend texts me from his work phone it comes up with the name of his company rather than the number smile. I'd ignore it, it'll be spam
