My 2005 Defender 90 needs new tyres. It was fitted when new with General Grabber TR 235/85 R16s, which have now done 60k miles yikes

I use it daily, primarily on roads and motorways, with occasional green-laning being the only real off-road action, so nothing too serious in the mud.

I've been happy with the performance of the Grabber tyres and would buy them again, but before I go ahead with replacements I wondered if anyone here has experience of similar alternatives that they would recommend? Road use is the most important criteria, for the moment.

All input gratefully received, thanks.

Take a look at BFG A/Ts. People have had 100k plus out of a set. They are very well made and have excellent road manners and are more than capable for a bit of greenlaning.

They may cost a little more but i'd say they are worth it. I have BFG M/Ts on my 90 and have been very impressed with how they wear and perform. They're pretty much indestructable.

Got General Grabbers on the newer 90 and that has around 50k on the clock and they're wearing well but when they expire it will be BFGs. Their reputation is well earned.

Excellent, thanks for that info - I'll check out the BFGs.

Check out the article towards the middle of the page about the guy who had 120k out of them. http://www.4x4-tyres.co.uk/

BFG ATs are great tyres but they are really for 50/50 on/off road driving. As a result, you will notice the difference between a smoother road tyre and the ATs which will make themselves known by road noise.

I don't know what they're like but BFG do an 90/10 on/off road bias tyre called the Radial Long Trail. That might be better if you do mostly road work.
