I'm about to take the plunge and buy an M5. I have a couple of options open to me and wanted to get the feedback of those with more experience of these cars.

Given the choice of 2 cars at the same price and both with a warranty, would you go for a 2005 car with 20k miles or a 2006 car with 40k miles? They are almost 12 months apart in age. The spec is pretty similar too. One is from a main dealer and the other is private.

Whichever one has the longer warranty.

I'd go for the 2005 car personally. But I'm new to the M5 world.

Another thing, go through the iDrive and see what servicing is due on both cars.

If you're planning on extending the warranty it gets significantly more expensive post 60k miles , the lower mileage example would be my choice

My choice too.

Also, How many previous owners? what work has been done (brakes etc) and how long does the extended warranty last for?

I think you can have the warranty up to 100k miles. I just had a quote for new discs and pads all round (doesn't need them yet) and it was £1,500 with the VAT.

had a 2006 M5 with 50k miles - in the four months of ownership, a total of one month was away, getting repaired.
I now have a 2005 M6 with 25k miles. - incredibly solid car feel.

I would go for the 2005 car with lower mileage. especially if it is also from a dealer.

Actually here it is. I might stress that the rears have 2500 miles and fronts 8000 to go.

Who quoted £900? I'll go there. I must stress that 8000 miles is two years for me so it's not going to come out the blue.

I'll see if i had kept my quote. I have 10k plus on fronts and rear on mine but had the quote done because the rear squeaks when braking.

Oh and it was BMW nine elms.

looking at your quote once again: mine was about 4 lines big not two pages worth of crap. Perhaps mine was not as comprehensive as yours after all. Will check later today if i can find the docs.

Its not so bad if you can seperate the two. Having both front and rear done at the same time would hurt. Is it possible to buy OEM BMW discs and pads seperately and cheaper than the dealer?

I am in similar position looking for an M5 currently. From what I have been told the 2006 onwards cars have condition based servicing rather than fixed service intervals as on 2005 cars which can be cheaper. I was told the only other changes 05 to 06 are the different key (post-06 have remote fob) but aren't there reportedly more gearbox probs on the earlier cars??

my 05 car is with a remote fob (and a start/stop button if that is what you are referring to) and is condition based also.

Ok, so looks like I have been incorrectly informed by dealers. Thanks for that. A bit more research I think!

There was a minor facelift in 2007 I think. New rear light clusters and more options (USB interface springs to mind).

Don't know, but discs are not always needed; I can feel the rim on top of mine sp they're probably not bullstting. You'll only have to do it once, too.
