So, after the massively OTT reaction to the 'Tokyo' 18% ABV 'beer' encouraging binge drinking what is actually the cheapest unit of alcohol you can purchase.

A few ground rules - it must be on sale in UK high street or online stores and sold as a drink suitable for human consumption (even if it's not strictly drinkable!)

To get things started, Tesco Value Gin is £6.98 for a 700ml bottle according to mysupermarket.co.uk and 37.5% ABV making 26.25 units or 26.6p per unit.

So, should tramps drink cheap gin, or is strong beer or white cider still the way forward for getting hammered on a budget?

Don't know, but my local Tesco have started security tagging bottles of cheap cider, which suggests that these are targetted by alcholic thieving pikey chav scum.

My tipple of choice - Thatchers Vintage - is, I am glad to say, obviously not a target biggrin

Traditionally best alcohol/price goes to cheap sherry.

QC, 700ml 20%, about 14units for £3.54 at tesco. 25.2 pence/unit

There must be cheaper own brand sherry around.

i remember a few years back as students we worked out the percentage of alcohol vs price of all the booze in our local supermarket.

We found that sherry had the most alcohol per pound, so we used to drink lots of it, mixed with very cheap lemonade before going out. Did the trick...

Asda appear to sell something called 'Mansion House' sherry for £2.40 for a 700ml bottle at 13% ABV making it 9.1 units at a cost of 26.4 pence each.

However, we do have a new leader, it's called 'Royal Emblem British Fortified Wine' and a 1.5 litre bottle costs you £5.39 at Asda, and at 15% ABV it comes out at a tramp-tastic 24p per unit of alcohol!

Er indoors occasionally buys Asdas own brand cheap cider , she pretends it's Magners and pours about 2 teaspoons full of cider over nearly a pint of ice. Apparently it's about £1.20 for 2 litres @ 4.2% abv , so given 500ml of the awful stuff is 2 units 1 bottle = 8 units : £1.20 / 8 = 15p per unit. I'd bet Aldi /Lidl / Netto etc probably do it cheaper / stronger , could we have a sub 10p /unit

I once saw Somerfield "White ste" cider, 9% 2L for £1.99. If I knew what a unit was I could work it out. I think they stopped doing it not long after - this was 3-4 years ago.

Asda 'Premium' strong dry cider in a 3 litre bottle is 5.3% and £2.78 so 17.5p per unit.

They also sell Oakstone Cider in 2l bottles at 4.1% alcohol for £1.21 at 14.8ppu making it the new leader(I've made up that abbreviation myself!)

Do you think supermarket price comparison sites were invented for people to analyse the cheapest way to get completely battered while spending as little money as possible? hehe

In France you can buy a litre of wine for under €1 which at 12 % makes 12 units so well under 10ppu. Unfortunately in the UK it seems impossible to get a bottle of wine for under £3 and even at £3.50 it's usually far worse than €1.50 French stuff.
