Kames Hosts British Championship Sprint Round
Kames will see a massive weekend of motorsport action this Saturday and Sunday, (1st and 2nd August) as the East Ayrshire Car Club track hosts the British Sprint Championship for the first ever time. A record 100 entries on both days guarantees plenty of spills and thrills with cars ranging from hot-hatches to F1 style single seat racers. The weekend forms the final part of celebrations to mark 25 years of motorsport at Kames and also incorporates two rounds of the Guyson Scottish Sprint Championship.
Sprinting involves one or two cars at a time running against the clock and at Kames is either 3 laps clockwise as on Saturday or 2.5 laps anticlockwise as on the Sunday. Both days involve practice runs in the morning and competitive runs in the afternoon.
This weekend’s event’s inclusion in the British championship has attracted drivers from all corners of the UK to the track. Travelling all the way from the South Coast of England, drivers Terry Holmes and Graham Porrett have both entered a 3.5 litre engined race car by Lola, a former F1 manufacturer. From the other end of the UK, Orkney’s Garry Dickson will make the trip down to compete in his bike engined Bluestar. Northern Ireland is well represented, with Neil Dugan in his Cosworth powered 205 GTI sure to be one of the stars of the day.
Another driver to watch is Aberdeen’s Scotty Cruikshank, who is also competing in the Lotus Cup Europe in his first season of motorsport. Cruikshank, who took a class win on his sprint debut last month, is hoping to give Scottish Sprint Champion Graeme Bremner a run for his money with both drivers piloting supercharged Lotus cars in the tightly fought sports car class.
Closer to home, EACC chairman John Frew of Tarbolton will be looking to show who’s in charge with a possible outing in his road car class Rover GTi. Club stalwart Jock Millar will, as ever, be making the short journey from Drumclog to campaign his Lotus 7 inspired Dutton, possibly one of the few cars which competing that may have been on track 25 years ago as well. It wouldn’t be Kames though without a Mini or a classic Ford Escort sideways at paddock bend, two marques that must have featured at almost every Kames event over the past quarter century. Dumfries’ Allan McDonald will be representing the mini’s, albeit with motorbike power behind him while Biggar’s Jimmy Crowe will take the flag for the Escorts.
Spectators at Kames get a great view of the all action from around the circuit, take advantage of the trackside facilities or wander the paddocks to see the cars up-close and maybe even grab a chat with the drivers. Spectators can also see run times and compare the quickest cars through the speed trap. Entry costs £4 for Adults or £10 for a car of four while under 14’s enter free.
East Ayrshire Car Club are looking for marshals to help make the event a success. Marshalling requires no previous experience but gets you free entry, a free lunch and only inches from the action!

I thought I would also mention that, on the Sunday at Kames, the East of Scotland Association defends the MSA Inter-Region Challenge Trophy won at Curborough last year.
This time we have two teams from the East, two from the West, two teams from the West Country, one from Northern England and another from Northern Ireland, so it will be an interesting fight for this year's honours.
The teams from the Scottish associations are as follows - if you are there give them your full support.
East of Scotland Association of Car Clubs 'A'
Stuart Morrison Honda Civic
Les Mutch Dax Rush
Ian Wright Honda Civic
Association of West Scotland Motor Sport Clubs 'A'
John Stevenson Subaru Impreza
Graeme Bremner Lotus Exige
John MacKenzie Radical Prosport
Association of West Scotland Motor Sport Clubs 'B'
Stewart Robb Jnr Pilbeam MP88
Drew Murray Fisher Fury
Stephen Alexander Westfield SeiW
East of Scotland Association of Car Clubs 'B'
Scott Cruickshank Lotus 2-Eleven
Lenny Bray F27
Garry Dickson Force Bluestar
