Driving south on the inside lane of the A3 late this morning towards Guildford I had to take evasive action to avoid a rather unexpected obstruction - an old chap cycling up the inside lane - in the wrong direction !

For those of you who don't know the road, it's a three lane carriageway, NSL and no hard shoulder to speak of.

Utter madness.

Not what you would expect to see.

Whenever i see pedalcyclists on the A40 (similar road) i must admit that i do cringe...cars etc whizzing past their ears at legal speeds.

As he was heading into oncoming traffic, generally large trucks etc., I pulled over in the next layby and called 999.

When I got through to the police they asked where I'd seen him and for a description of said gentleman. "Black jacket, carrying a carrier bag, probably in his 60s, had grey beard and appeared to have a ruddy complexion." Thank God he wasn't wearing red !

I used to cycle lots around Guildford (when I was slim & fit). I used to cycle up the A3 too from Guildford to Ripley fairly frequently.

Best bit is you get wafted by the cars so it's easy to keep a good speed up, only problem is you nearly get killed at every junction.

In Hindsight I think cyclists & cars should not mix on roads like that. My old skool teacher died on the A3/M25 junction having been mown down - not nice but completely avoidable.

What I can't understand are the cyclists that ignore the cycle tracks that run parallel to a dual carriagway and ride on the road.

Even better are the 'sport' cyclist that ride around the lanes about 6 abreast and give you the v's when you eventually squeeze past.

My pals and I ride mountain bikes, and if we are on a road section, practically throw ourselves into the undergrowth if a car catches us up. If they are stuck behind us, we will wave them by if its safe.

Strange how attitudes differ. Road cyclists own the road, whilst mountain bikers are happy to share.

Almost my number 1 pet peeve. Apparently the tw@s do this to stop drivers overtaking were it could be dangerous. Not sure they have the intelligence to realise many people will have a go anyway, and they are just making that much more dangerous. Lycra wearing woofters.

Cycling the wrong way up the inside lane? Pah! Positively safe!

Going home from work in rain, at night, along a NSL dual carriageway, overtaking a couple of lorries in nearside lane. Came around a right hand bend and got a brief glimpse of a shadow on the right and then this thing whizzes past inches from the drivers door. Looked in the mirror and it was a guy cycling the wrong way beside the central reserve (ie in the "fast" lane) with no lights, no reflectors...

Nutter...
