Racing the nurburgring - how?

Hi

Its always been my dream to drive and race there - the nordschleife I mean - I was fortunate enough to drive there 18 months or so ago and since then have become a club racer here in the UK.

But I still have the dream of racing on the nordschleife!

I know some larger events are done there (VLN, etc) - waaayy out of my price range. But are there smaller club-level events run there that would be open to international competitors [with an Int C license]?

I don't speak German so I'm not really sure where to start looking. Anyone any ideas?

(btw I fully realise that at 8-9 minutes/lap qualifying will take a while and the race needs to be up to an hour. I also know I'm likely to need a faster car than the one I race at the moment)


Please tell me this isn't an impossible dream!

I believe you can buy a seat in a race car relatively (I use the term advisedly ... ) easily.

Speak to someone like Dale at RSRNurburg (he posts on here) he'll be able to point you in the right direction.

Now you just need to find a pre-1981 car suitable.

They do a round at Spa too if you are really keen!

There is always the 24hr, usually plenty of seats going for that, from uk teams..

You need an International C licence for that and the costs are around £1000 per hour in a decent car.

The CHC (or RCN as it's now known) might be good for you. It isn't a "race" as such, but more of a set of time-trials with all cars on track at the same time.

You aim for a target lap time and get points for how close you get to it. Then the next lap you go as fast as possible, then another target timed lap, etc. Good fun, and very good for learning the circuit at the limit whilst dealing with much faster and slower cars on the track around you. A very good experience and step towards VLN.

Don't worry about how fast your car is - it's likely that there will be slower cars out there. Also, no need for Int'l C unless you're doing the 24h.

Or GLP for a less competitive approach, mainly using modified road cars, but you need a German address, which I'm sure someone on here (or ringers forum) could help you out with if necessary.

True enough, but thats only a couple of signatures on top of a Nat A and an other medical :-)

Hi Shivers,

I suspect from a cost point of view that the CSCC route via the ADAC 300/400/500km race is probably the way forward. We have done the event twice and it is fantastic.

As far as I remember last year's entry was about £300 and gave about 5 hours of running/practise on the full ring/Gp circuit combined.

I was pretty sure they did. This is the way to go get back to basics in a classic. Racing a classic around the Nordschlife would be awesome (If a little scary)
