This was intermittent but is becoming more persistent. First thing in the morning ,unlock and go to start car ,nothing , sometimes a solinoid click , but will not start .

Starter motor ?

anyone had a similar on a petrol audi .

Also if it is ,is it direct supply for the V8 from audi as german and swedish don't list one .

I had exactly the same with my S4 Avant - turned out that the starter has a tendancy to get cooked by the exhausts. Main dealers do the starter as an exchange item for just over £100 and my mechanic had it all fitted for about the same again.

Same symptoms in my S4. Turned out to be a dead battery, even though it had been fine the day before. It jump started ok.

Cheers tigger , they produce alot of heat , its not the battery, that we know as when it does fire its fine ,its been doing it for months now .

i'll call audi and find out what the damage is on a starter.

Also may look to fit myself as i have the space an knowlage to do it , its just the time .

I'm getting similar on mine but don't think it's a starter motor problem, Audi main dealer have had it and it's showing no fault codes and guess what the intermittent problem didn't occur while they had it.

A freind who is an Auto electrician (and bloody good at it) believes strongly that the ingnition barrel is worn and may need replacing.

Seen this a few times before (also intermittent, also no fault codes) and it was indeed the starter motor.

I had changed the barrel first as that was the expected solution - I've got a spare now that works perfectly!!
