Hi,

I quite often see Chinooks flying over the City of London and am intrigued what they're doing there. Anyone know why they fly there?

Cheers,

if i remember correctly (and i might be wrong), the reason why you see chinooks over the capital is that the MP's have requesitioned them to do the daily 'pret a mange' runs... this is evidentally FAR more important than sending them out to Afganistan to help prevent our boys from getting blown up whilst fighting to preserve the interests of the USA.

as i said... might be wrong though.

They land across the road from me, in the grounds of the HAC on City Road

Sometimes see them over Basildon. I think they probably go up to Colchester or Wattisham.

It's like deja vu all over again with this question.

One flew Eastwards along the South Coast this morning, quite high, and returned an hour or so later. Obviously surplus to overseas requirements....

Or maybe in training....rolleyes They can't all be deployed, we should be more concerned with the 8 that have been sat in storage at Boscombe Down for years because of a procurement F up.

There's a low-level military helicopter transit route up the river which is a convenient (and fun) alternative to going the long way round the city.

wot Tuffer says about training...

I was discussing something close to THIS TOPIC (missing miltary choppers where needed) at the weekend with someone from the MOD

[They're not all zombies wink ]

He pointed out that if the guvmint bought another ten, twenty, thirty or however many new CH47s, Merlins or whatever the troops could do with, they could not find enough crews to drive them. Basic and simples.

So to man them they have to find money to hire 'em and train 'em after recruiting them

After intensively teaching them to add up, subtract and multiply (and spell and read....)

(then no doubt they will find that the Procurement tossers bought the wrong version, or the interior colour scheme contravenes H&S rules and needs a twenty zillion squid refurbishment and a new mobile phone number ordering so it can interface with Vodafone...)

Which saddens me 'cos we now have less true resources than we've had since I was a lad.

Now I know I used to live in a hole in the road whilst Wilson and his cronies destroyed our 1960s defence capabilities but we are in a far worse state now than then...

politicians! definitely not the kind of people we should trust to run a "peeupinnaboozer"

the only real answer I see is put your money where your mouth is before you start a war, buy what you will need before you commit to it

buy spares too
