Having a trawl through the classifieds this doesn't appear to be particularly common. Is this the best compromise diesel in the range between cost / performance or does it fall between two stools being neither pacey or economical ?

I think it's the latter. Not as economical as a 520d or as torquey as a 530d however it it is consequently the cheaper 6cyl option....
I had one before my 520d and the only thing I miss is the 6cyl smoothness. 520d is more economical with similar performance and probably more saleable.
