Late 80's/early 90's sci fi drama - can you remember?

Prompted by channel hopping tonight and catching the flag of Lorraine that pops up on V for Vendetta, can anyone remember a sci fi (I'm presuming it would be in this genre) series (I don't *think* it was a film) in the late 80's / early 90's that was based on a fascist regime (again only supposition).

I can't really remember much, but I have recollection that the flags had a fist on it, or there was a fist in the title (have googled to no effect) and MAYBE some reference to god?

Yeah, I know, it's not a lot to go on, but as I frequent here more than a TV fan club forum, I thought I'd open it up to you guys.

I'm really hoping someone can reassure my other half I'm not imagining it!!

While we're on the subject. Some telly show years ago, was on a sunday night.

A bunch of people running around trying to kill an alien race called (I Think "MD's".) There was a bloke who slit his wrists and jumped in a water reservoir to infect a load of people.

Had that bird in it from the show with all the gadgets too.

What was that called?
