Quick question, can you get skis in a Z4 coupe? I should know the answer as this must get asked all the time, but I don't. Does anyone else know?

How long?

And are you planning on carrying a passenger?

There's a ski / bike rack available from BMW. It sits over the rear window like Bond's Esprit in For Your Eyes Only.

The Missus could probably keep up running alongside the car for a couple of miles but then she'd be spent. She's not as young as she once was. So, yes, one passenger.

Thank you for the ski rack option. They tend to generate quite a lot of wind noise (and hammer fuel economy, if that bothers you) and given I wouldn't be hanging around in the slow lane I'd prefer to put them inside, even if they poked between the front seats.

It'll be really awkward to poke them through the gap to the boot.

It's not a big gap, and they'd encroach on your driving space (if there's enough length available).

I can live with them resting on the centre arm rest, but that's about it. Driving to the Alps in first gear just isn't sensible.

would a cheaper alternative (which would also lay the ski's flat, with less drag. be one of the inflatable roofracks?

http://www.handirackuk.com/

looks like it'll fit. And i cant see how you could end up with scratches on your car.

http://www.argos.co.uk/static/Product/catalogId/15... cheaper than a set of dustcaps from the bmw dealer...

The Z4 only has front doors, so you'd not be able to fit the pair of inflatables over a wide enough area!

That's the fella. Couldn't figure out how to link it. I think that looks great, just the job for nipping into Cortina town centre and despatching a few hired goons on motorcycles.

It does look a tad over engineered - not sure the frame had to be the size of scaffolding eek

Mind you, if it's designed for Autobahn blasts to the Alps then better safe than sorry I guess.

Thanks guys. I don't own one yet, but am investigating options. That certainly is a serious ski rack. The way the skis fit would keep the noise/drag down to a minimum so might not be as bonkers as it looks.

I consider buying a Z4 Coupé, but I need to be able to transport at least one pair of skis (1m70). I know about the scaffolding ski rack, but since I drive to the slopes every weekend (no Autobahn blast - it's only 3 miles), and I don't consider fixing such a rack every Friday and de-fixing it every Sunday, I want to transport the skis inside.
Judging the gap between the partition behind the seats and the roof, I think a pair of skis should just fit, but maybe you need to place something underneath, so the skis stay more in line with the bootlid.
Can someone with a Z4 Coupé and a pair of skis test this out?

I could measure the gap for you, but I only have a snowboard no skis.

Cheaper to hire the skis when you get there.

True, but I'm fussy about skis. And I love the convenience of having my own, although I will admit that getting them there could be a little inconvenient if I don't buy the right car. I suspect I could be heading for a JDM Civic Type-R.
