In another post, I had the need to use the phrase "the reason being", followed by the actual reason.

Thing is, I was unsure as to what punctuation was best to insert betwixt "the reason being" and the reason itself. Dash? Comma? Full stop? Colon?

In the end, I plumped for the semi-colon. Have I done the right thing, or will people now laugh at me in the street (even more so) for my comedy colon usage?

Depends I suppose.

If you want to infer dramatism with a pause or a big pause after the precept you could use a comma or even a semi-colon.

Or none.

Question mark ? I suppose it depends on the narrative.

I would use a semi-colon or comma.

A semicolon would be wrong if you couldn't also just end the sentence after the word 'being'.
