Tsunami style armageddon question?
Discussion
That film right - Armageddon, Comet crashes into the Earth - big wave. Everyone with me.
So in the film the Father and Daughter are stood on the beach to face 'the end' and of course are duly killed.
My question then. If you were out at sea, in a lifejacket (and possibly wearing a parachute) Could you go up and down a 500ft+ wave ? or alternatively dive under water and swim through the base?
How far out from shore would you need to be ?
Any theories....
Out at sea a Tsunami can be very low in height.
This is because a wave is as 'deep' below the water as it is 'high' above it, if there is nothing but water under the wave, it will travel at almost sea level. However when it reaches shallow water, it will suddenly grow. When the water depth is equal to the wave height, it will break.
The survivor in deep water would be OK, wouldn't feel anything.
The survivor in shallow water, if the wave hasn't broken, could dive and wait for it to pass over.
The suvivor in shallow water, if it has broken, is not going to be a survivor for long.

Just for the record the scene is from the film Deep Impact not Armageddon
I have great difficulty distinguishing Deep Impact, Armageddon, Independance Day and The Day After Tomorrow - could someone please outline the differences? Ithankyou.Armageddon - cheesy meteor disaster movie with Liv Tyler and Aerosmith
Independence Day - cheesy alien movie
Day After Tomorrow - cheesy world-freezing movie

Obviously I was just checking someone was awake.... Virtually the same film anyway, Bruce Willis in the other one though.
Would you free fall off the back of the wave, or ride down it ? Once you are over the crest the wave is moving away from you, presumably you are going to 'fall' quite a long way?

Having sat a few hundred yards out at sea during the last tsunami, I can confirm that the wave can be quite small and that you can watch it go by - sort of.
HTH.
wow. How odd. HTH.
However that was quite a "small" one - in the film the wave is over 500ft. Would that make a difference to the actual ability to ride up and over it ?

If so, I would think it depends on the wave's length, more than its height. Short length = steep wave = you would need to swim vertically upwards.

Big movie waves won't get much bigger than Roland Emmerich's new disaster film '2012'
Watch towards the end of this trailer (warning, includes possible spoilers) due out here in December.

I just shelved the 'ten year plan'..
Some of the other stuff on the I Ching and the Mayans is quite interesting if your into prophecies though. Follow the links on the page to the 6 part 2012 program.
What will spoil this film is the all american hero family. Just like the appaling version of war of the worlds which suddenly moved the invasion central to the USA
