I think I'm right in saying that you can take a photo of anything from a public place, right? So I can take a picture of a row of houses and use for absolutely anything I see fit, correct?
Now if I took a photo of a commercial building (again from a public place) - if that building has a company name emblazoned anywhere on it, can I still do what I want with the image (put it on a website for example) or does their rights to the co. name preclude such use as it would form a part of the image?
If you see what I mean

You'd need a building release form from the company if you wanted to use it for advertising even if taken from a public place, I think. I'd be wary of using the image if there logo was visible. Now if I took a photo of a commercial building (again from a public place) - if that building has a company name emblazoned anywhere on it, can I still do what I want with the image (put it on a website for example) or does their rights to the co. name preclude such use as it would form a part of the image?

I think this is right, in simple terms although I'm willing to be proved wrong, not for the first time either.

Expanding on that slightly - if I made sure There wouldn't be a logo visible - would it make any difference if it were not a single company operating from there, but several - do I have to get a release form signed by each? Could be a PITA if so and easier to just get a stock image.
