I have an E34 project on the go. It's the 3 litre V8 (M60 B30) at the moment.

As I'm taking the engine out anyway, anyone have any advice on other engines that drop in without much hassle?

Obviously the 4 litre version (M60 B40) is a good start, but as they all seem to be auto's. Is it as simple as swapping the gearboxes and chucking it back in the car?

So question, could I use the box off my 3 litre on a 4 litre block?

If not and I have to use a 4 litre box on the 4 litre block, what else is different beyond that? Prop shaft, diff etc etc.

Any pointers to save me finding out the long hard way much appreciated.

Regardios,

Phill

A mate of mine has a 4.0 on a 3.0 5sp manual box. No issues as far as I'm aware

As in the V12 from the 750? Hmmm, bits of drool are running down my chin.

The power from that turbo'd M5 engine is wicked but I wanna keep this particular lump pretty straight forward with plain old fashioned brute force. Also a turbo is pushing the budget.

Thanks for all your comments so far.

I have an E34 540i with an added Vortec supercharger. Standard internals and OEM ECU. Gives just over 400bhp and pulls very well right accross the rev range. Mated to the 6-speed manual it makes a very good package.

Ahh that sounds more like it.

Did you fit the charger kit yourself?

No. I bought the car with the conversion done. It was carried out by Ray West up at Thruxton. A top quality install I must say. I know the previous owner very well (GTWayne) so I have good access to all the cars history. It is only running 0.5 bar so there is the possibility of more to come from the charger. That would probably require a aftermarket ECU and maybe some internal changes. Lack of power is one thing the car does not suffer from! I have owned an E39 M5 and the two compare well.
