What is the problem?

My engine suddenly died whilst driving

I had driven about 20 miles so engine was nicely warmed upm I had to bumble along behind some slow stuff for 5 minutes or so and temperature was nice and stable. Slow stuff turned off so I started to boot it a bit along a fun "B" road when all of a sudden the engine died. I rolled to a halt and tried to re-start. The engine turned, caught straight away and died before all cylinders could fire, it did this 3 times. I left it for 30 seconds tried to start it again, and it started as normal.

I drove home and power seemed as normal along with the urge to rev etc. 10 miles home and no problems at all.

What do people think happenned? (the imobiliser is disabled at the moment so it wasnt that). Engine has 15000 miles on it from new, new battery, HT leads, plugs, fuel filter.

I had something similar years ago, cleaning and tightening the connections to the fuel pump cured it.

When it's failing to start, can you hear the fuel pump prime when the ignition is turned on?

The fuel pump primes ok and seemed normal when it wouldn't start, I am wary of fuel pump issues and carry a spare one and its related relays.

I had a simialr problem with the engine stopping for no apparent reason. I found a hairline crack on the distributor cap, fitted a new one and the problem has not been back since.

it just seems odd that its happenned this once but never before and now is fine! I willo check the dizzy cap tho

best way to check the cap run the car in the dark with bonnet up ... you will soon see if its cracked... look like lightning

had something similar once, turned out to be a loose connection in the LT side of the distributor
