ok budget is 14k max for 2 cars. but there are certain criteria.

1 needs to be economical car 45+ mpg
1 must be fwd or 4wd because weather can get seriously bad
1 must be serious performance
serious performance must NOT be fwd also sub 6 seconds to sixty etc
both must be poser (ish) type cars no 1.1 runround bangers ie i must want to keep both mint and looking good.
both must be relativly reliable ie no tvrs for 10k too risky though tempting!
insurance isnt a problem so grp 20's are ok
for example this is my front runners just now

bmw zm3 coupe for 11000 and a 406 coupe 2.2hdi for 3000

Can pick up a decent S2000 for 10k, although it just misses out on the sub 6 sec 0-60. Bang on the money for Group 20 insurance though wink

If you have an economical daily driver (I can't recommend one as economy has never been a concern of mine) your performance car could be an early Elise or a Lotus 7 replica, one would easily do sub 6secs to 60.

i stay just along the road from your new place, and I know our BMW will be stationary when the ice/cold/snow starts. All my quattros have been faultless when the white stuff comes, much better than you expect for a car. Personally I would go for a tdi quattro and something else for fun. A B5-B6 earlier A4 1.9tdi will give you 45+mpg, 4WD, reliable to boot, there is a reason there are so many of them out this way! Or a Mk4/5 gt tdi golf

Not to discount the value of snow tyres either, went for a play in the snow in the quattro last year my mate was in his Saab with snow tyres and getting similar grip levels.

This would leave you with £10k to spend... which leaves a very open field. I went for a run in a certain yellow E46 M3 last week, and it really makes me want one, very accomplished/ planted car, and credit to the driver as well! And well within that budget you could get a nice car and a good budget for getting it just right. Even if that doesnt ding your bell, £10k will get you a lot of any car. Plus you have JD motors 3 miles away who are excellent to boot.

Bought my wife a Jazz blue golf GT Tdi 130 a few months back and it is a lovely car. Get good mpg and still quite nippy. 02 plate for £4100 with 80k, full service and 1 owner. Other option would be Audi Q 1.9 or 2.5 tdi??

Leaves you around £10K for something nice. I've not long bought an S4 bi-turbo and i'm really impressed with it. M3, lotus, etc. Personally i'd buy an RS4 2.7 and a mountain bike, should get both for £14k!!!
Good luck, hope you find your cars.

I’m utterly biased, but honestly think these are half-decent selections wink

Fabia vRS for £4k:
- 130bhp diesel, easily 45mpg
- FWD
- poserish value depends on how you view Skoda’s, but they’re good looking enough IMO
- practical, 5-dr and 5 decent seats
- it’s VAG so should be reliable
- can’t find a decent example, but we bought an 05-plate vRS on 59k miles for <£5k last month

BMW Z4 3.0i for £10k:
- 231ps, 0-62 in 5.7s
- RWD
- definitely a poser car paperbag
- straight-6 makes the right sounds
- it’s German so should be reliable
- e.g. http://www.pistonheads.com/sales/1128414.htm (not the best I could find: I bought my near-identical 54-plate on 18k miles for £10.6k 8 months ago although fair do's that was buying a soft-top in the middle of winter...)

Not sure if they float your boat or not though...

My cars have only just pipped my bikes again! You would get an RS2 for that cash as well, I know genuinely one of the cleanest ones in the country for sale at the moment. And without being a stalker freak I know where he is moving too and he as an 1800ft hill literally over the road from his house with half a dozen cracking trials, I ride them very regularlysmile

The 2.5tdiQ will not do 40mpg unless you get a B5 shape, post 2001. The 1.9tdi esp the 130 one would remap really well and gives a good spread of speed/economy.

S4 is a fine choice as well smile could get a V8 one for that money too these days, LPG it and that should work out to around 40mpg!

Or you could save yourself another lot of insurance and road tax and buy one fast 4wd car?

Impreza?
Audi S3 or the 2.7 S4?
Evo?

who are jd motors? local mechanic/garage? some interesting choices there. the audi rs2 option had already crossed my mind. fwd and snow tyres would be good enough for the roads in winter though yeh?

Yeah your road is cleared pretty well usually. I live just the other side of Insch and our road doesn't get cleared unless a farmer does it.

JD motors is one of the garages in Insch (the one with various Lotus/TVR/BMW's etc outside normally). Nice blokes.

behind "red" barrem... as you come into Insch.
http://jdmotorengineers.com/

Dont rule out the RS2, drove one a few months ago from Crieff to Inverbervie. It sometimes comes to my house, can ask nicely if you like and perhaps get a spin! Very iconic for what it is.

Dont forget their is a railway station in Insch as well, 25minutes to ABZ.

Where you are about to move to, it isnt the road, its other drivers dare i say it. The main A96 can be a nightmare especially at the pitcaple bridge. Generally I stay on B roads when it gets iffy, genuinely I find it safer, less compacted and less acts of stupidity/ignorance, but that's whole different argument. My pal is a Norwegian so he can drive in snow anyway, but had studded snow tyres on. But it should fair a lot better with them. I did 2 years ago make a similar choice for location. I spent nearly £13k on an A4 2.5tdi quattro sport avant, only got the use of it properly for maybe a week. Was a good alround car, can pick these up cheap, but sadly the engine isn't one of Audi's finest, prone to BIG bills! So it went and I got an old school quattro again and a 530d for the wife. And very happy with that. I got a cheap fun car, she got the expensive sort of efficient one.

either way its going to be a compromise!

Lupo TDi does 60+mpg!

service/repair/modify. dont sell cars as such.
J - is racing hill climb this year with his nephew. He has a quattro as well.
D - is ex BMW mechanic drives an E46 at the moment but is about to trade it in for something REALLY dull!

Both really do know there stuff, no moopoo, very reasonable rates, petrol heads. A serious amount of exotica passes through there.

Aye, Z3M is a damn good shout actually.

Would save a wee bit of money to play with it though, get it just right.
