Stick the old 16v engine in it, or do a 1.8 20v conversion. You could extract a little bit more power from the old 8v lump, but in terms of returns for your money an engine swap makes much more sense, especially as this is a common conversion.

I feel embarrassed now, it was me who pointed 8vboy at this forum as being more suitable for a technical engine-related question than GG where he originally posted, but he's ended up having the piss taken even more in here than in the original thread...

to make more power you need more air and more fuel.

Lets start of with the air. get a replacement drop in filter from K&N or one of the other filter companys. Why drop in? well it will retain the ciold air feeds and should be more simple than a induction kit. Then you want to look at the exhaust. a new manifold mid and rear section fshould liberate a few more ponies. then you get a little more extreame. you will need to start looking at cams and cylinder head work.

as for the fuel, its ECU remap time! get a decent tuners, or specialist, to carry out the work. try to use someone with VW knowladge.

you should get away with the fillter and some exhaust work without a remap but it will not make the most power until it has been done.

Also might be worth looking for a GTI forum (there WILL be loads) and asking what the guys and girls are doing on there. Might beable to give you more specifics depending on what you are looking for.

Chris.
