Restaurant in Bradford
Discussion
This weekend my OH and I are staying at the Midland Hotel on Friday night (won it in a charidee auction).
The obvious choice is to go out for a curry, with default option being Akbars on Leeds Road. Does anyone have top tips for other smart-ish Indian restaurants to try? (on the condition that they aren't somewhere my missus will kill me for taking her too and therefore ruin the whole evening by her looking petrified as we try to have a 'civilised' evening on Lumb Lane).
Also, anyone have any non-curry alternatives?

Sorry - don't really know any non-curry alternatives, but when in Rome...
Akbars is good, as you appear to know already. I also like Nawaab:

I seem to remember my parents liked Nineteen - not sure if that is still open. More at the posh end of the market.
Good luck.

It's a funny old place Bradford. I generally avoid the place like the plague....
but
The best curry I've ever tasted was in here..

Now I'm a hairy @rsed meat eater and generally taunt vegetarians for being pasty and ghey but that was the best indian food I've ever tasted.
Your misses will kill you if taken there though as it looks more like a greasy spoon than anything else

You have won a night away and knowing that Akbars is the best in town you want to chance it by going somewhere else? Do you want to press the self destruct button? You know you need to go to Akbars, the Lamb Handi Asian style is just fantastic. There, an unbiased view of what to do....
If you, or more importantly the missus, don't fancy a curry, I can vouch for Chino Thai which is in the middle of town in Centenary Square. Great food and really friendly service. Last time we went, we had the place to ourselves, which is a MASSIVE shame.
In their efforts to prevent haemorrhaging money and attract people in, they have cheapened the downstairs cocktail bar. Unfortunately, in the centre of Bradford, this attracts some 'characters'. Especially with a punchbag machine...
I am a massive snob however so the above may appeal!
Failing that - Nawaab on Manor Row is good, as are Akbars, Akbars Cafe (new place - much more laid back and informal) and Saffron Desi, all on Leeds Road. None of the last three are really within walking distance, though.

I have no idea why people rave so much about Akbars, Ive been twice and both times it was terrible. The first time the food wasn't nice at all but thought it was a one off so gave it another go (as its always busy and so many people go on about it). Rubbish food, slow service and over priced.
If you really want 'when in Rome' why not try The Kasmir or The Karachi which are both very close to the centre of town by the Photography museum and Ice rink. Brilliant food, great service and very good value.....above all they appreciate your custom rather than the other places that want you in and out as quick as possible.

There's also 'The three Singhs' on Sticker Lane.
Great food, great service.....and the tables aren't set 2 feet apart, like Akbars.

I generally agree with Falkster about Akbars - highly over-rated
The food was good but I always feel like I am at feeding time in a zoo and rushed to get out again
It is more expensive and very noisey and cramped - and only go if someone else has already chosen it
Also it is not (safe) walking distance from the Midland
The closest that is decent is as mentioned the Nawaab (being 2 mins walk from the Midland)
and although I have not been for a while it always did very good food and un rushed service
If it is still there an alternative is the Blue Sky Chinese in Little Germany which is very nice and excellent food & service
We didn't like the 3 Singhs (sorry Ady) as amongst other things they even vacuumed round the next table
as soon as they had gone and we were still eating our main course. The food was good and cheap tho'

Free hotel or not, I would not go out in Bradford.
If you must, then use the money you have saved on accomodation & put it towards a taxi to Leeds or even somewhere like Horsforth which is only up the road.
No words can describe how much of a sh!t hole Bradford is.
