silly thing i have been looking at this watch.

http://www.jomashop.com/omega-apollo-11-311-30-42-...

as a present for myself for my 40th birthday

what is the correct price, i have read normally on sale at the omega shop 5th ave, new york, I just happen to be in new york for my 40th, could it be an investment.

on current exchange rate that is showing as about £2700.

If you buy it from the USA there is a good chance you will get copped for duty and VAT

A limited edition if 7969 isn't very limited to me. Seems like they come out the a limited edition of the moon landings every 5 years

Incorrect - there's a very very small chance you'll get stopped at customs. In 20 odd times coming back from the US in the last 3 years I haven't been stopped once, and during those times I had a rolex sub, a tag monaco and an omega speedmaster in my case.

Also remember that you'll be stung for sales tax at 8.8% if you're buying the watch in NYC.

However, there is good news - you can haggle, hard. Look for at least a 15% discount on the watch and if you don't get it from the omega store go somewhere else. Wempe and Tourneau are both just down the road from there (incidentally, the omega store does have one of the gold apollo watches in the window, 1 of just 69 made - that's what you call a limited edition!)

Didn't read the bit about buying it there, I thought he was buying it through the post. Highly unlikely you will get stopped bringing it home personally smile

I'd be a little concerned about after-sales; the site says that the Guarantee is administered by the store and not Omega...

Have they come through official channels?

Would you take the gamble on having no warranty?

Not so sure I'd jump in without investigation, cost/benefit and all that! smile

was not looking at using that website I linked to, it was the only place I could find a price for the watch, I am in new york at the end of august and I thought that the only place selling the watch was omega on 5th avenue.

If the £2700 price is with the sales tax included then yes, would go for it, as it will be an £800 saving on the RRP of £3500.

I think that this is actually a nice piece - BUT there will be a 50th anniversary model etc etc.

As mentioned above, the platinum cased version with gold medal (run of 69) really is a limited edition but in a completely different ball park price wise.

Would suggest that if you wanted a Speedie, just go for the standard moon watch and save yourself a grand

£53,000 plus for the platinum version and was talking to the guys in Watches of Switzerland on Oxford St a few weeks ago and all 69 have been sold.

As for the 50th Anniversary edition, well lets just say this - I am starting to save now ready for when it is launchedhehe
