The horses have bolted !

I had a similar problem with my 4.2 - put in on Joo's dyno for a diagnostic just to see if there were any problems. The initial dyno run gave 268bhp - nowhere near what should be expected (Joo indicated that a strong 4.2 should be arround 330 - 340 bhp).
He replaced the air filter, did a few more runs and got it up to about 300 bhp !!! Probably the cheapest horsepower increase ever
just a new air filter.
When I bought the car in Jan I know that the CATS were collapsing - they rattled somtimes as the honeycomb structure was badly collapsing.
Joo fitted brand new CATS, and with sports back boxes the subsequent dyno runs took the car up to 371bhp!!!! I was dead chuffed with that.
Soooo, the lesson learnt there is don't underestimate how much the engines breathing can be strangled by some simple intake / exhuast problems......
The next chapter:
Whilst the car was being serviced a couple of weeks ago we discovered that it needed a new clutch, and the old fly-wheel was scored - cue high performance lightweight RaceProved flywheel replacement. Also, new HT leads, spark plugs as part of the service; then back to Joo to complete the induction work and a custom re-map......... We're not yet finished, but this 2002 4.2 is looking very healthy indeed (I'll post up dyno print outs etc when finally happy with it).

I should get mine on a Dyno really. Interesting results, what are you planning on doing to resolve any possible problems?
Initial plan is to have new filter and remove cats. they do sometimes rattle, and check them, coax it through the mot, replace the exhaust which is the standard one with a sports job and probably decat it, then take it back up to the same road and see what difference there is. I really must hook up the lap top as the recent thread on that was interesting.I'd start with the basics first as a cheap cure.
Your fuelling in all over the place and way too lean.
Replace the fuel filter if it hasn't been done recently. Give your cats a kick although a reduction in airflow would show as a very rich condition (unless he was checking the side that didn't have blocked cats.....?
Plug it into a laptop and check the T-Pot values and see if there are any errors anywhere.
After that I'd log some data while driving and see what the Injector PW values are to see if your lack of fuel is a mechanical of electrical issue.
After that I'd look at gummed up injectors.
If possible, whizz the cam covers off and check the cam timing.

mine started rattling and it had poor performance - the honeycombe had effcetively broken free inside the cat and was sliding back and forth under acceleration and braking crushing each end of the material and effectively choking the exhuast gases. Took the cats out and threw them away - been great ever since.
Hi all.
Got the laptop hooked up, I'm assuming that the lean reading is from 2468 which has the high +ve adaptives, he had the sensor in the nearside exhaust, does that make sense?

Going to start adjusting things tomorrow see if I can get them a bit better balanced.

not as bad as the 190hp i once saw and another at 240hp) but it's defo not a happy bunny is it? Needs sorting.
ked. These are metallic foil ones that are pretty robust. Once they rattle they have had it.
