There's one thing that gets me particularly hot under the collar and it's happened thankfully only twice this year.

The latest episode was last Wednesday evening. Arrived home from work, knackered. Wife was knackered after a day of looking after the kids. So, my suggestion of a midweek Indian takeaway was well received.

I phoned the order through and was told it would be 'about' half an hour. So I turned up after 28 minutes to pay for and then hopefully pick up the meal within a reasonable 5 minute period.

The food was finally given to me after 55 minutes from the time I ordered it.

The last 15 minutes before my meal was presented was spent sweating, tapping my feet, checking my watch and watching the pretty empty restaurant look, well, pretty empty.

So, what to do in these situations? It's not just the fact that I was kept waiting but also the fact that me and my wife were starving PLUS I was hoping to spend 20 more minutes with the kids before they went to bed.

I had a word with the guy who brought the food out of the kitchen but he hardly spoke English so I just fked off, seething.

What is one reasonably allowed to do ? Demand money back, throw chairs at staff or what ?

Walk out and go somewhere else if you can. Several times I have done this, if they don't want to bother paying attention to the customer then why on earth should we pay for it and use their service?!

Mind you, if the next closest place is far away, then you'd be shooting yourself in the foot frown

People don't complain or act enough!

But they make you pay when you arrive, as do most.

How do you stand for demanding a refund. Is there a known 'reasonable amount of time' to serve you ?

If I hadn't already paid, I'd have walked out. If I had paid, I'd wait til I got my food before speaking to someone in charge and informing them of my displeasure, which I would convery to everyone I knew.

My local curry house is great, but they cook everything fresh and that takes time. We've gone there en masse for the Bristol curry night and unfortunately they simply couldn't cope. So, we won't be going there as a group againfrown

Obviously if they can't cope with a take-away when the restaurant's not busy then don't go back full stop.

have a deep breath and calm down dear. you'll end up like michael douglas in falling down if this sort of thing pisses you off.

as with drug dealers, everyone knows the takeaway's standard response is " 'bout half hour mate".

turn up after 40, they'll keep it in the warmers for you.

A place near me used to do this, we found out it was because they only start cooking it once you've arrived. Seemingly, they used to get 'done' for a couple of takeaways a night when people didn't turn up.

I don't agree with it but if that's how they operate, they should do you the courtesy of letting you know beforehand.

I'm aware this goes on. There's a Chinese near us that practises this. However, the Indian in question has always been on time in the past so I know this wasn't the issue. Even to the point that there were 2 other people collecting who arrived AFTER me but got their meals before me. Now THAT really got me itching.

Could have been a genuine mistake then perhaps?

Where decent curry is concerned, the benefit of the doubt must usually be given as they're few and far between. If it happens again though, vote with your feet.

Could have been a mistake, yes. I don't have a problem with genuine mistakes but I do have a problem with people not offering an explanation or an apology. yes

That would have been perfect. Cost to them ? Nothing compared to me never buying from them again.

used to own and run some very very high quality fish and chip shops.

always found myself slightly bemused when customers complained if they had to wait more than 3 minutes (despite just about everything being cooked to order), when people seem to happy to wait for hours for chinese/Indian, much of which takes as long to cook as fish and chips!

Anyway try and speak to the boss- know a couple of people that run/own curry houses and they all speak reasonable English and want to do well with their businesses. rarely any point in talking to the waiters in my experience!

Well they should be mate. Every single customer is important to any business. I'd be surprised if any self respecting business worth it's salt took the attitude you have there.

That is bemusing.

But to be fair, being told 'about 30 minutes' when in reality it's 55 minutes is a bit of a piss take.
