Info Request - BMW M60 4.0ltr V8 Engine.
Discussion
Hello folks, could you fine people please give me the low down on the BMW M60 V8 engine? I'm mainly interested in the 4.0ltr version.
Any info regarding possible problems with them (other than the Nikasil issues) or benefits with them would be appreciated. Things to watch out for and parts prices, I have been told of an Alpina derived version for sale near a friend that has a rattly top end(s). I don't know the mileage but he wasn't sure if it was timing chain rattle or valve gear rattle. Is there a more likely culprit between the two? Are they expensive to put right?
The car by the way has been written off with a heavy rear shunt bad enough to fold the car. The roof has also been cut off, I don't know wether or not this was to remove the occupant. I know that these Alpina cars are extremely rare (I beleive 49 were made world wide of this particular V8 model and only 46 of the later 4.6ltr version) so please don't go thinking this is an act of mindless vandalism/canabilism.
Thanks for any help.

The only thing people seem to complain about on the M60 about is intake vacuuum leaks, requiring replacement of seals - not difficult. And the oil pump in the sump can work itself loose on some (drop the pan, check/tighten three bolts, easy)
The valves use hydraulic lifters, so an oil change would probably sort the rattle, but the cam drive itself is duplex roller chain and supposed to be tediously reliable (the later M62 went to single row chains).
Other than that - seems to be a good'un!

Fom what I have found so far there were 4 versions of the E34 based Alpina B10, two with straight 6 engines and two with V8's.
The 4.0ltr version came out first with higher compression Mahle pistons, reworked intake system, possibly some head work and a remapped ECU to suite.
This was later replaced with a 4.6 version which, due to the nikasil lined construction of the original blocks preventing a rebore, required BMW to cast a batch of all new blocks with the larger bore size.
The more I think about this lump the more I'm tempted by it. I just hope it's not a money pit!
