Im looking at getting some new tyres for my Disco TD5 for a bit of green laning and the odd pay and play day, i'm currently torn between going for a set of all out wheels and tyres for off-roading (Was thinking of Insa Turbo Special tracks and modulars)and keeping my current road tyres for general use, however im also intrested in going for a more general purpose tyre to avoid having to swap the wheels over for playtime. What i need to know though is how much more road noise will be generated by changing from my current Goodyear road biased tyre to BF Goodrich AT's, i do about 15,000 a year road driving and intend to use the Disco off-road most weekends, can anyone offer me their opions on the options available.

I did exactly that with my Disco II TD5 and found them to be superb off road but "rougher" feeling on the road. More noise, more feeling (not in a good way). That said, I think that's what AT tyres are like. They are 50/50 off road / on road so they're going to be like that I guess. For me, it didn't work cos I didn't spend enough time off road to make them worth the bother of the on road noise. You might be different though if you're off the road once a week. Personally I always worry about using the same tyres to do serious mileage AND offroading. I just worry that the tyres might suffer some damage that could be catastrophic later on the road. That might be one for a separate thread though.

Another option would be Grabber AT2's. They are an agressive pattern so will be good off road but they are very quiet on road. I was concerned when my indy wanted to fit them to my Disco 2 but I'm really pleased with their performance both on and off road.

I was going to have them on SWMBO's P38 but they look out of place so stuck with Wranglers. The Disco is a bit more "rufty" so looks the part with the AT2's.

AT2's seem to be the tyre of choice amongst many in the LR community.
