Hi guys,

Gonna put my 98 500 up in the air to have a gander, but thought I might stop by first to see if anyones had similar.

Mid to rear end clunking noise ONLY on lifting off the power, would be very surprised if its exhaust as i've only just changed bushings and fettled it, was thinking more diff/driveshaft?

Sound like a UJ if its when easy off power...Best place to start looking first... might be the cheapest as well.

Just replaced my CV joints and solved this problem, was also worse after a motorway run when the joints were warm. Fitted drivelink joints at £31 + vat inc boots grease and clips. With these joints you must have the sharp center splines as the flat top ones are too slack on the drive shaft.
order Ford sierra cosworth 2wd upto 1990. note when cold the joints show no slack so must check after a run.

Hope this helps

Diff mounts loose....... mine was like that when i purchased it on the test drive, turned out the rear mounts were not as tight as they should be due to the bolts tightening against the diff body first, seems done up,but were not.

Thanks for all the suggestions guys, diff mounts/ driveshaft flange seem very likely as you can practically here it coming through the floor on hard lift off! Sadly will have to wait till I feel a bit better as I've been struck down by the bacon sickness frown

a Common cock up with some not so specialists is the use of the incorrect bolts on the front diff mount. This is especially prevalent after a unit has been re-conned. some mix up coarse metric and UNC.

discounting this then your diff mount is still the most likely area of problem since the forces in this area are massive and certainly enough to slacken the bolts. the tightening torque in this area was once described to me as "as tight as you can get them since they always come slack" it is always worthwhile to remove, clean the threads and re-assemble with good quality locktite retaining compound. Tighten them with a long bar.
