R35 GTR...........owners what's it like
Discussion
Fellas, thinking about placing an order for a GTR for march / April delivery next year. I'm fortunate enough to have a weekend car (F430 Spider) but looking at a nice daily driver. Had an RS4 saloon awhile back, loved it. So thinking about something along these lines; practical, performance with some comfort and overall useabilty. Went out for a demo in the GTR on the weekend and was very impressed. I've singled out the E92 M3 coupe and C63 AMG as possible alternatives (yet to demo either) but I'm really looking for feedback on what the GTR is like to live with on a daily basis. I know the servicing intervals are 6000 miles, no biggie for me as I'm only 10 miles to the office and dont cover big annual miles. I imagine the Merc and M3 may be a little more comfortable than the GTR, though I thought the ride was fine (have read alot about an overly stiff ride in the GTR) Performance wise the GTR will be superior in every way, I'm sure. Anyway, if there are any owners out there that would care to report on what their GTR's are like to live with as a daily I'd be greatful. Thanks.
Contemplating sticking an order in myself.
Don't need the pickup anymore really so am looking at either an M6 (used) or GTR (new). Completely different beasts but just looking for something that can fit 2 adults and a couple of kids, but is also fun. Wife has 4x4 for weekend & trips away with luggage, etc.
Do around 20k per annum, which is the only concern with the GTR. Neither would be tracked & insurance/fuel isn't a consideration.
Need to change the company vans in November which are all Nissans so could possibly tie up a decent deal on a GTR on back of this as total order would be circa 150k.

Awesome. I picked up mine a month ago and loving it. I also have a 430 F1 which I used to love. After getting the GTR, I've not gone near the Ferrari. You mention that the BM and Merc would be more comfortable. I think you'll be surprised how comfortable and easy it is to cruise in a GTR. It's an almost perfect mix of motorway cruiser, and then madness when required.
Will,
You might be better asking the same question over on the gtr owners club forum www.gtr.co.uk, you'll get a better response.
Ive had my car now since early May and it just gets better and better.
Only car ive owned that exceeds what i expected.
As a daily driver its good, refined and comfy enough, great on the motorway, and when you want to proceed at a rate on knots my god the performance is mind blowing, and it can be good fun with vdc in R mode despite what some of the detractors say (those that havent even driven one) and the transmission is sublime.

I can only agree with what has been said.
Its utterly amazing and a totally lives up to and exceeds the hype IMO. Performance is just mental.
My only concern might be that it could be a bit too special to be used daily as it will attract way more attention than the other cars you are looking at.
The other problem with using it daily is that you will probably end up losing your license. Its very addictive.
Get one.

Awesome bit of kit, done 4300 miles in mine now, just keeps getting better and better.
Did john o groats to lands end non stop for charity at the weekend, 18 hrs in the car, only out for fuel.
Fastest most comfortable car ive ever had, ive had friends drive it who have 911s,astons,rarris and other such vehicles, same response from all of them.
Fantastic car
(sorry, can you tell i like it)

It is unbelievable. Makes all other performance cars and most supercars seem silly and outdated.
I used to have an F430 too and loved it, but it can't compare to the GT-R in terms of performance.
Perfectly useable everyday car. The gearbox is superb in Auto and suspension is (almost) supple in Comfort.
However, you will need to track it, at least once, to see just what it is capable of!

Its the best car i've ever owned, to live with only done 1000 miles so the suspension is still beddign itself in, however for me it's a comfy ride with a lovely interior, a shade plastic in places in comparison to some of the German motors your also considering, but the gearbox is great (especially in R mode) both in A and M, the engine and drivetrain, which compliment each other very well indeed, the only thing lacking is a soundtrack....which can be fixed with the Y-Pipe mod. It attracts a fair few looks, being 6ft3 the rear seats are less than useless for use other than a coat and bag, Boot pretty deep and accomodating, i have the black edition i prefer the black hedlining and like the red trim on the door cards and seats.
In a few words....DO IT
In a few words....DO IT

The GTR is it very capable around a Track BUT I'd be VERY careful when doing 0-60 & 0-100mph "Launches";) these a VERY bad for it IMHO
There is an Inhirent problem with the Gearbox during "Launches"
the helical main gear after after main Gearbox clutch (it naturaly trusts against the casing) but during "launches" it trust reverses and there is no allowence for this.
Ith then pushes off s weedy Gear retaining "C" clip, then the gear on the splined shaft strips the spline on shaft, losing drive
This is VERY expensive proscess labour wise
as rear sub frame has to be removed, gear box split and rear subframe replaced back into car. Once the gearbox is overhauled. Remove subframe, install gearbox and replace

My mate has converted a few main shaft and 1st input gear train

The new gearbox software doesn't allow "launches" in the traditional sense anymore.
Now the revs rise to barely 2400rpm before a fairly gentle clutch release, unlike the earlier US and JDM cars which merrily revved to 4,500rpm before spinning the wheels.
The new "launch control" starts can also now be done with VDC on, so there are no warranty implications IF the drivetrain were to fail whilst launching (of which I have not heard about any yet).

Whoops sorry, I must have just made that all up

The UK will be much kinder during "Lanches" than JDM's just have to prove VDC was not turned off

It was only just a heads up and maybe cured by the lower launch RPM or maybe not

yes it has been cured for nearly 6 months now since the Euro car appeared. Its not an issue any more.
Tony

I've been out the loop for a while
Can I assume by that, teh "Gearbox programing" caused the initial mechanical Fault on JDM and USA models or was the 09-10 Euro box been updated mechanically aswell?.
for those who may not seen in a GTR Box here is one I looked at some time ago, sorry about the pic quality as used my mobile phone

This is the splined shaft that gets stripped when "intermediate gear" falls off damaging many costly components
The £3.00 "C" Clip that can come off

Gearbox with Auto the Valve chest removed
The gerbox 1st clutch, the 2nd clutch that sits on the long splined shaft in view. The "intermediate gear" (the one that comes off) sits between these "Clutches" IIRC
