Will be staying in Bromsgrove weekend of the 19th September for a friends wedding anniversary. It also happens to be my Birthday weekend so am looking for something to do either Saturday or Sunday day, or both. I know nothing about that neck of the woods, being from the North West.

The Wife says the choice of activity is mine, so I'd like it to be car based, or something else that would appeal to geeky car obsessed bloke.

I'm going to have search to see if there are any track days within a reasonable distance, any suggestions of something to do would be gratefuly received from PHers who know the area.

Cheers thumbup

Only thing that springs to mind is Drivers Dream Days operate out of the ProDrive Test Track at Kenilworth. Its not immediately on the doorstep but it is nearby. It may be short notice to get a slot.

Good suggestion, unfortunately I've already done a day there in my own car, fast laps, handling circuit, skid pan etc.

What's the nearest race circuit to that part of the world? Any museums other than the Motor Heritage one?

I know that the Old RAF Throckmorton is not too far aaway, I did some driver training with work there a few years ago. Can't see anything on Google, but was wondering if any public driving stuff goes on there.

I thing Throckmorton is now the Shakespeare County Raceway and they do have an event on over that weekend. http://www.shakespearecountyraceway.com/eventdetai...

Otherwise the National Motorcycle Museum by the NEC at the Junction of the M42/A46. http://www.nationalmotorcyclemuseum.co.uk/museum/.

Good Luck and enjoy your birthday what ever you end up doing.

(PS not car related but I bought my wife a flying lesson from coventry airport for her birthday. You can fly down to Silverstone and back. She absolutely loved it)

Now that I like the sound of, never been to see drag racing so that could be just the ticket. Cheers!

The bike museum would interest me too.

Spoilt for choice now.

theres coventry transport museum i was mightly impressed when i went for the first time about 2 years ago, and have been back another couple of times since

that place is well worth a visit, free entry as well, the have some real rare stuff inside including one of Fangio's cigar shaped red ferrari race cars that is said to be worth a couple of million, to the current land speed record car with a big simulator of the record run

Throckmorton still exists as it in 2005. Lots of Private "contractor" and "research" work still goes on there.

Used to be a good quad biking place near Bromsgrove - no doubt Google would find it.

Nearest Track that I'm aware of is Donnington (about 1.15 hrs away) or Sprint tracks at Shelsley Walsh or Curborough (Lichfield)

I have a friend who lives in Bromsgrove, asked for some suggestions for you:

In and around Bromsgrove:
Avoncroft Museum of Buildings http://www.avoncroft.org.uk/
Wythall Transport Museum http://www.bammot.org.uk/
Forge Mill Needle Museum http://www.forgemill.org.uk/
Jinney Ring Craft Centre http://www.jinneyringcraft.co.uk/
Not sure if any of those places would have any good events on, all sounds very quaint.

The Queens Head in is a nice place to get some food, and there are some good canal walks around there.
http://www.queens-head-inn.co.uk/

Or another nice place for lunch/dinner is the Barnt Green Inn.
http://www.barntgreeninn.co.uk/

You'd need to book in advance for both though.

I live in Bromsgrove and if i was you, i'd go home and come back!!
Theres the heritage motor museum at Gaydon less than hour away?
A44 to the Elan Valley and then the Elan Valley mountain roads for a few hours (highly reccommended!)
Drive over the malvern Hills is quite nice and relaxing on a nice sunny day.
Barnt Green inn and Queens Head are both very nice, quite posh.
the museums are a bit.. well... drab!

Thanks for all the input guys. I've decided to go to Shakespeare County for the drag racing one day, Shelsey for the hillclimbing the other.

Both venues are on Saturday and Sunday. Any suggestions as to which way round to do it?

I think that there are two different meetings on at Shelsey over that weekend, but the website doesn't seem to explain what's happening when. Anyone advise?

Will the drag stuff at Shakespeare County be the same both days, or is one better then the other?

at Shelsley saturday 19th is rounds of:-
Midland Speed Championship, Ginetta championship, Scimitar championship, TR register championhip.
Sunday 20th:-
Richard Egger/HSA championship,Ausitin healeys, TVRs, sevenoaks speed league and MSCC Techniques championship.

Basically both days will get you a mix of single seaters, classic cars, locaterfields etc

There are some good battles brewing in the Midland speed on saturday, sure to be some fireworks, with a few people trying very hard to win their class etc.
