C**ks on M80 last night
Discussion
Hi, last night there was a lane closure on the eastbound M80 about 22.30.
Warning signs were in place for miles, and the usual countdown markers at 200yd intervals.
The actual single lane started at the Kirkintilloch exit.
I would just like to say 'Thanks' to the 'vigilante' driver of a grey Mazda 6 who took it upon himself to firstly straddle the lanes, then drive in the outside lane whilst indicating left, presumably to stop people getting past him. As 2 people had in 5 minutes.
C**k!
And a bigger C**K, the cretin in a silver 51 reg Mondeo estate who almost took off my front bumper when he swerved from the outside lane in between my van, in the space I had allowed for the left indicating C**k, and Mazda C**k, to get 1 space further up the line. He probably doesn't realise how close he came to being t-boned, as I had given up on leaving a gap for Mr Mazda C**K and was just about to close the gap.
I hope for both of you that your idiot driving does harm only to yourselves and not some innocents.

I feel your pain.
On the M8 a while ago, same scene, 1 lane closed - white can straddling lane 2 and three to stop people getting passed.
He got both barrels from me whilst he sat in his seat with that 'what you on about' look on his face.
Annoyingly, the incident that had caused the lane closure was no longer there!

Year before last I would fly from Edinburgh to London and back once a week. Lost count of the idiots who did the same thing going under the Gyle roundabout on the way back in to town from the airport. Dozy t
ts didn't realise there was enough space between the outside lane and the central reservation crash barrier though

So what do you guys propose in this circumstance (and no I wasn't on the M80 last night)!
Do you move over to the lane that is staying open as soon as you see the signs and wait in the queue? Or do you ignore the signs as your time is more important than everyone who is queuing and just go down and barge your way in when the cones block your lane? And obviously the queuing lane wouldn't be moving so slowly if it wasn't for the drivers barging in, causing cars to brake etc etc.
Even when there are signs to say "merge in turn" us Brits don't seem to be able to work that system - it works fine in France where I have seen it before.
Thoughts?

Follow the highway code?
If there is already a queue in the inside lane then carry on in the outside lane (at reduced speed) and merge in (at low speed) at the front. All per highway code...
It's not that my time is more important but I am usually thankful to the dimwits queueing early.
As for those blocking lanes I'm sure plod would take a dim view...

There does not need to be ANY slow down of traffic if people just pay attention, gradually INCREASE their gaps and use the road as it is designed.Do you move over to the lane that is staying open as soon as you see the signs and wait in the queue? Where the backups occur is when people try and close gaps, prevent movement and make last moment attempts to dive in to the queue.
The worst I have seen for this was the M77>A77 section in afternoons.
Some people seem to get so worked up at the fact traffic can actually flow they are willing to risk accidents just to ensure another driver does not continue driving forwards.

tend to merge in turn, had one gimp block me and got in front of him after the roadworks, slowed down so he needed to overtake, then sped up so he got flashed from behind, repeated 50 + times ?
finally got bored of it after 20 miles and let him pass, swear the guy's head was purple
ooo you're going to get some stick for admiting that.. finally got bored of it after 20 miles and let him pass, swear the guy's head was purple

know exactly where you are coming from though.

thought about it, but wanted to see his face, whilst covering my mouth with spare hand, laughing too much
got cut up by a tanker driver the other night, harvest energy or something - fuel tanker as well - apparently the indicator means he can try to squeeze his way on and ignore other users

I can't stand people who jump actual queues, but a line of cars in the inside lane 1 mile before the outside lane closes isn't a queue. It's a line of people who don't know how to work a lane closure.
As was said above, increase gaps between the cars around you, and don't block people merging into the inside lane - then everything will flow nicely.

Exactly right IMO. As was said above, increase gaps between the cars around you, and don't block people merging into the inside lane - then everything will flow nicely.
If there's 2 lanes merging into one 1 mile ahead, that means the lane is going to close IN ONE MILE AHEAD. Doesn't mean you need to merge into that one lane there and then like a large number of idiots seem to think. Those rightous idiots who do that, then block you later on as you merge in are the ones that cause the delays: if everyone merged in turn approx 200-400yds before the closure then traffic would flow much better, but just a shame the majority of drivers aren't capable of that!
I do think squeezing in at the cones is taking the piss a bit though...

People that skip queues are idiots as far as Im concerned. Its nothing to do with the highway code, its to do with common sense and manners, of which the numpies that skip into queues clearly lack, simple as that.
i bet you flash people who queue jump (read overtake for normal people) tooCant be bothered with the folk who queue in inside lane for 1-2 miles before lane closure
Merging 2-300m before is acceptable to me The idiots though that seem to drive with the OH S##T Cones almost bouncing over bonnet better cut/force in are the ones which P##s me off
