So, anyone done this?

I possibly have the option of doing this - I definitely want to get out of my current work position, mainly down to lack of promotion/future options. I understand that this potential job wont have many career paths but it would be something different to what I've done before.

If anyone has done this I would be very interested in your work experiences, any difficulties etc.

I would be employed by a small company who I believe would get me the work, and then I'd go out and perform the survey.

Cheers, Greg.

Do you need to pay anything up front?

Do they guarantee you a certain amount of work?

I'm always wary of ads like these in the papers.

Hi,

It's a small company, a friend of my brothers. It wouldnt be (like) one of those companies/agencies who advertise in Metro etc where you'd go on a big register or whatever. I would be a 'proper' employee. I may need to pay to go on a short course but to be honest I havent got the details.

I am more interested in the job in it's general terms, like how long a survey may take, if it became boring/tedious, dealing with customers etc. However, if anyone has done it for one of those big companies I would still be interested in their experiences.

Cheers.

Ant job which has its origins in a government policy is, to my mind, a non-job and its longevity will be subject to the whim of transient politics.

If youre talking about Energy Performance Certificates or EPC's then ive done the course.

Well it wasnt my money but my works needed me to get through it. I mainly do non-domestic or commercial properties as we have a number of commercial properties that we rent out.

I did it last year and the training was about £2.5k although you can get it a lot cheaper now and you then have to put together a portfolio of various properties and all in all I would say in time and money its cost us about £5k.

Is there a good return on your money?? Well I dont do it full-time, maybe about three a month and there is a reasonable return on your money but a lot of estate agents either have their own assessors or already have agreements in place so you may find it very difficult to get a foot in the door. There are a lot of Panels out there where by you basically bid for the work and the cheapest gets it.

I know the domestic training is similar money but charge out costs are an average of £40-£50 a go. Commercial more like £300-£500 so commercial has a quicker return although maybe not as many properties.

When I trained we were lead to believe that an average survey was £750 and you start to see pound signs appear !!!! But this was just the training company putting a spin on it.

Give me a shout if you need any more info

Hi there,

Thanks very much for the reply, that's the type of reply I was looking for. Yes I believe it is EPCs. As said, the company is already established and is getting work steadily - I think their domestic price is £49, they also do commercial work and HIPs. I do intend to try and do it full time if possible, but I could probably do a few days a week at my current place if need be.

I may will contact you for more information - thanks a lot for the offer.

..With regards to the other poster discussing the government practices, then yes you are right - but I'd like to think that in the future there will be more legislation with this type of thing (for job opportunities, I hate red-tape in general!), and any experience would be advantageous. There are many careers paths I'd prefer to follow, but due to my age and lack of experience, aswell as no higher qualifications I dont really see that as viable.

Cheers, Greg.

Hey there..

I am bumping this as I am looking at doing it again.

I know the EPC and HIPS in general are quite a 'negative' on here, but it's a job and even if the Conservatives are going to change things about if they get in - I cant see them dropping any obligation to stop the whole 'Climate' rubbish.

So, anyone had any experince recently? I'd prefer people who are involved or got close to being involved (SwanJack?) rather than those who've been let down by an EPC on whatever property.
