The geese get very cold. The colder the area, generally the better the thermal properties of the local animals.
For a given Tog value, down typically weighs much less than synthetic fibres or feathers so you get a lighter duvet.
Down doesn't form that much of the plumage of a bird so you need more to make a duvet, hence the cost

Yep I agree. Hungarian Goose Down duvet - get one that is compartmentalised with little squares so the fevvers don't end up at one end.
And down pillows need a more solid core otherwise they are rather un supportive.
Egyptian cotton duvet cover and sheet and jobs a goodun (although I hear that a different type of cotton is very popular at the moment, but in a curry and cocktails induced fuzz the name escapes me)
Or try bamboo- thats really soft.

OK, thanks Is there an age thing associated with duvets? Once upon a time I had one duvet and it worked perfectly all year round. But since my age started beginning with 4, I seem to need several different ones and frequently get either too hot, or get a cold bum...

Wife and I have just done the same following our experience with the bedding in a Marriott... 10 minutes in the bedding department of our local Debenhams and we were sorted. Duck down pillows, duck feather/down mattress topper and a goose down/feather duvet, and 500 thread count sheets/covers for that finishing touch. Almost as expensive as the bed underneath it all, but worth every penny.I mean proper luxury, I want to try and replicate a Holiday Inn deluxue room that I stayed in. Was the best nights sleep I had ever had.
Any ideas?
Be warned though - we've both slept in every day this week since changing over to the new bedding on Sunday, so you may also need to invest in the loudest and most irritating alarm clock you can find!

It's those hot flushes that come with age More seriously, everyone is different & body's temperature regulation changes over time. Lots of people have 2 duvets - winter one at 10.5 or 13.5 tog & a summer one at 4.5 tog.
