Every now and then there is a big leap in technology that revolutionises the way that we live and work, the most recent being telecommunications and IT.

It seems to be in step with the Kondratiev wave, link here for non stock brokers and technical analysts...

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kondratiev_wave

But what is the next 'big thing' that we can expect around 2040 / 2050?

Fusion power? - Unless it can be miniaturised and fitted to cars, mp3 players, I don't know if it would be really revolutionary.

Quantum computing? - If it can be done, computers will become unimaginably more powerful, virtually any problem would be solved almost instantaneously. This would certainly have a huge effect on society.

Teleportation? - It's already been done with particles, if this could be done with larger objects, even if people are excluded, suddenly transportation becomes a lot easier.

Any other ideas?

I reckon they'll invent actual machines what can dispense drinks and even food at the touch of a button. These machines could be placed in the workplace to cater for those too lazy to make themselves breakfast, or for those who quite fancy a mid-morning snack or a hot drink at practically any time of the day.

Oh, I know it sounds far-fetched now, but you mark my words - one day it will be reality.

...and small distances - I'm looking forwards to teleporting paper clips from one side of my desk to the other.

Where are the silver jump-suits, food in pill form and hovering personal transportation systems that the comics of the 70's promised us?

Eh? EH?
