A popular choice is a Green Air cotton panel filter.

Another popular choice is a Carbonio carbon fibre air intake, gives the car a nice deep whooshy induction noise.

People tend to stay away from Pipercross and K & N induction kits as there can be a problem regarding the oils in the filter upsetting the MAF. I havent actually ever heard of this being the case, its more of an urban Mk4 Golf myth I think!

Jabbasport also do a pretty good looking induction kit.

Cheers guys heard some good reviews about the green panel filters will a panel filter make any difference to the sound? obviously it wont be as loud as a induction kit but compared to a standard paper filter?

the Pipercross panel made it a fair bit noisier but not to CAI levels. imo a def fin'd airbox and panel is good enough unless your going to stage 2 and beyond. also look at the turbo intake pipe as that'll offer a better improvement if its the same as the 1.8t in the Vrs
