...is the coldest part of the fridge the bottom?

This, and other life or death questions, is what I am mostly contemplating this evening.

I always assumed that yes, the bottom was the coldest part of the fridge. However, someone on here mentioned in quite a flippant manner the other day that the coldest part was actually the top. I am still quite distraught...

doesn't it depend on where the heat exchange thing is?

Often the cooling element in a fridge is at the top to try and even out the distribution. The coldest part is still the bottom though. If you turn down the thermostat setting so it's just on freezing it's the bottom where the ice forms first.

I always put my beers in the bottom of the fridge in the salad box thing, I'd prefer not to have to complicate matters.

The top shelf of my fridge isn't high enough to accept beers, so they go in the bottom. As it were.

It depends on the fridge. Coldest part of mine is the back, as the cooling thingy is there. Not noticed a difference top-to-bottom, probably because the compressor is bottom/back.

Nice to see someone contemplating the mysteries of the Universe at this time on a Sunday. thumbup

Warm air rises, cold air decends - so of course it's colder at the bottom. Same principle if you happen to have built an igloo, dig a hole lower than where you intend to sleep, that way the cold air decends beneath you... (Thanks Bear Grylls!!)

Our fridge defies the laws of physics. It's not cold enough to keep food cool yet has a block of ice formed in the bottom left corner, the furthest point from the cooling element. The door doesn't shut properly either and there is a sticker on the middle shelf that says "too warm" yet 5cm back there are things stuck to the very same shelf by frosty fingers.

I believe it may be part of a strange universal time paradox.

Either that or it's broken.

If hot air rises then why do the Pyreneese have snow on the top, but it's 40 degrees C on the ground?

Actually in some ovens the hottest part is often the sides, as that is where the elements are sited.

Mate, I'm not trying to survive in the Arctic, I'm just trying to keep my beers cold.

Personally I prefer Chutney with my cheese, but each to their own I suppose.
