My Blackberry gives you three options if you press a key while the keyboard is locked.

1. Unlock (and you type in the pin and it unlocks)
2. Make Emergency call (it asks if you're sure then calls 999)
3. Cancel

So I was sitting on the crapper this morning and I heard a female voice.

Doh.

My trouser pocket called 999 and the operator had been speaking to me for over a minute, trying to work out if it was a hoax, an accident or if I really needed an emergency service. I apologised profusely, explained what happened and she was a bit arsey about it.

I understand why the Blackberry has the feature (so that anybody can make an emergency call from the phone) but surely it shouldn't be so easy for it to dial from your pocket?

I think she probably heard me farting too which is quite funny.

What Blackberry do you have? I can't get mine to do anything when locked, except unlock? (8900 curve)

All mobile phone's manufactured for the last few years have allowed you to dial 999, 112, or 911 whilst key locked.

I think it's a requirement that the device be able to make an emergency call with no simcard and the keyboard locked.

I once called 112 in china to test the system I was installing and the phone chose to make it on a real NW rather than my test network. Whoops...

I once dialled 999 by accident. Living in London in the 90s, bit hungover, and I wanted to call a mate who lived down the road. I noticed that his number started the same as mine - 0181 946 xxxx. His was something like 0181 946 9994. So I tried ringing just the last part.

My hungover brain didn't realise that dialling 9994 would be recognised before the last digit was dialled paperbag

You don't press 9, when it's locked press the roller ball thing, you should then get three options come up, unlock phone, emergency call and cancel.

My daughter dialled 999 on the home phone when she was about 18 months old. She was playing in our bedroom, whilst we had a lie in, and was pretending to phone grandma. Got a snotty phone call off the police about 2 minutes later, saying don't let her play with the phone.
