Sod it! I'm going to do it.......
Discussion
.....and ask my good lady to marry me.
Never done this before and fully expect all the "don't do it" comments but seriously need to get some advice on what to do with regards to buying the ring.
Now I don't fancy spending a load of money on a ring she then does not like so what is the correct form? Do I buy a 'cheaper' prop ring just to do the deed and then choose the 'proper' one when she has said yes??
Help!
Edit - Update on page 3 on how I got on!!!

Yep, I've had the 'subtle' hints on the style she likes.
That's a good start. So go get the ring, the jeweller will exchange it and re-size etc.. if needs be.
I may well get flamed for this, but I took a female friend along shopping for a woman's view on the style etc. of the engagement ring, plus it helps a lot (IMHO) to see it on a finger ( of course the friend put it on a different finger )....

So, in Summary: if 'Sans' ring I suggest an immediate plan to go purchase together the one for her. (London, Amsterdam usual places...)
After trying on a few she thought she liked, ended up with one I chose in the end - made her cry whilst trying it on so hit the spot !
The guy selling started to sob too then but I smelt BS

oooo I like that one! We have a trip away at the end of Sept....and I like the idea of choosing the ring the day after etc - good advice that man!.....unless she sets her heart on the super expensive one and then I'll be blaming it all on you!!!After trying on a few she thought she liked, ended up with one I chose in the end - made her cry whilst trying it on so hit the spot !

Choose the ring with her.
Also if you buy antique ring not only is it unique but you don't pay VAT, which depending on how much you spend, can be quite horrendous.
I would recommend http://www.howardsjewellers.com in Stratford upon Avon...

I got my ring from Tiffany's online, they were awesome to deal with and assign you a personal guide so you always talk to the same person.
I would recommend them every time!

They were decent value and to be honest, when I produced a box from Tiffany's it all kind of took care of itself

Firstly congratulations
Secondly as stated above if you do decide to do it "With Ring" speak to Lord Summerisle on here, by all accounts very knowledgable and can save you a mint, or at least ensure you get cracking quality
I know when I summon the balls to do the same thing I will be talking to him first
This might help
