Stolen mountain bike
Discussion
I've been away with work all week and I get back to find my bike has been stolen. It was a GT Avalance 2. I'm gutted, more so that I cannot replace it as that will more than likely get stolen too. I only moved in 2 weeks ago and the area isn't the nicest.
I had it locked to concrete tile things that had holes in them and were part of a brick wall in the front garden (only place I could keep it) and had a good lock. In fact the lock comes with a guarantee that they will replace a bike if someone manages to break it. The only problem is that the lock has also gone with the bike and I need to return it to the manufacturer to claim the guarantee.
No damage has been done to the concrete tiles and so they must have picked it? I still have the seat as I kept it in the house incase it got stolen..... The theif and the company that made the 'secure' lock are both b

The lock wasn't necessarily picked - I had a Sold Secure Gold rated lock that had the cable cut. The lock was untouched but they just used bolt cutters or something. To add insult to injury the house insurance wouldn't pay out because the bike was at work; work wouldn't pay out because they are uninsured at weekends (surprisingly common); and the 'insurance' on the lock isn't insurance - it's a warranty against theft, which isn't the same.
1700 quid of lesson, right there. Bike lives in the house now.

Not going to report it to the police as it's a waste of time. I'm not sure how they removed the lock but why would they take it with them? The bike would have been impossible to take without undoing the lock, which is also very heavy and not the sort of thing you would want to carry around unless they could make use of it.

Buy another lock, break it, then send it to the company asking for another bike. deadmau5 said:

My mate suggested this. The guarantee says that it does not apply if power or battery tools, or a gas torch has been used. I've a feeling they would simply say that it looks like power tools have been used to compromise the lock and there is no way to disprove otherwise. Ah, but I could then write to them and say "ha, you're wrong, I used a sledge hammer and a nail, so pay up"!
Not sure a hacksaw would work as the links in the chain all spin and so a saw would just make them spin back and forwards with the sawing motion. The actual lock would take days to saw through by hand. Guarantee is up to £1400 apparently. I would also have to send them the original receipt for the lock and the bike!
It still doesn't seem like it's been stolen, until I walk past where it was. I've now become obsessed with looking into people's gardens as I drive past to see if my bike is there, as well as looking at every bike that rides past me.
