Ibiza oil leak

Hi everyone.
I have quite a severe oil leak from my 2002 Seat Ibiza Chill 1.4 MPI. There is wetness on the right hand edge at the back of the block, just to the left of the clutch cable area...? After pulling over from a short drive you can literally see oil dripping from the block onto the components below. When the engine isn't running the leak slows quite considerably but it still leaves some pretty scary looking puddles! The engine bay is beginning to burn the oil too now so after a short while running steam also comes from the bonnet. I have chosen not to drive the car for the last couple of days.
Apologies for the poor explanation, but does anyone have any idea/has it happened to you?
