Not sure whats going on here. Oil pressure is fine (60 cold and 50 warm), cars running ok, I've checked the oil level and thats ok? Is the light an oil pressure light or an oil level light?

damn; just logged on to post something similar !!

As with you, I've got good pressure and lots of oil, but mine only flickers when warm and usually after the engine has been given some exercise (if you know what I mean !)

I bought an oil pressure sensor, then ran away when I realised where it was and how many children I'd have to send in to change it.

It's on my list, so good luck and I'll watch this thread with interest.

Mines similar. It did it the other day about 5 mins after I gave it some beans. Engine had only been running for 5 mins when i gave it a tickle so I probably shouldnt have as I'm always religious about warming the car till the oil pressure drops fully :-(

I got out quickly checked the oil, seemed a little low (bottom marking) so trickled the car the mile or so home and left to cool. I checked the oil when cool and it was half way down the dipstick, more than when i checked it when warm? topped it up with half litre and drove to work this morning, just pulling into the car park and oil light comes on again? Jumps out checks oil level and its fine just over the top marker confused

I've done a few searches on this and now i'm scared! I've just had starter motor replaced so I'm hoping that its got something to do with the mechanic knocking the big fuse while he was in there?

Cars done 56k but the engine was rebuilt at 42k so i'm hoping its not going to need doing again...

Mine similarly got a good thrashing doing 1/4 miles a couple of weeks ago, first drive after that the light was on, topped it up a little, it flickered on & off for 10min or so & then went off.

How low was it when you topped it up?

Try changing the oil pressure relief spring. Made a big difference to the oil pressure on mine.

Oil pressure seems fine mate. Its just the light which is a bit worrying, will the relief spring fix the light even if the gauge shows good pressure?

It was lower than normal but not empty, i assume i'd just burnt some off drag racing. I topped it up with no more than 1/6th of a litre, so not enough to do damage, but seemed to do the trick. It doesn't loose oil through day to day driving, so assume this is to be expected if driving it in this way.

its not too dificult to get the oil pressure switch.

fuel rail unbolted and lifted out the way, coil packs unbolted, and lifted up and its under there.

Had it too - heart attack time.

Reliably told, if the Oil Pressure is fine then it's the switch and not to worry about it - new switch, no more false positives on the light.

Heart rate back to normal.

thanks all; looks like it's oil switch replacement time.

Think I'll leave it to an expert; too many pipes and wires for my liking.

Mike

(sorry Peter, wasn't meant to be a thread hijack. Drop me a PM if you struggle to find a pressure switch)

Absolutely.

Oil Pressure Switches are like Hens Teeth. Try Racing Green, as they were the only place I found them.

Over and out for a few weeks.

P.S. is that a picture of my car on your profile ? wink

Hmmm now its coming on whenever the car is warming up, about 70 degrees. Does the pressure switch read high and low pressure or just low? I've checked the oil again and its slightly over the top line on the dipstick about where the little hole is. Is this too high? Is this why the lights coming on as the oil expands when the engine warms up? Pressure on the gauage is still showing normal though?

This mite be an answer.

The oil light may have been put back in the wrong place. Mine had. When my alternator lite was on, I changed the alternator which didnt cure it. It turned out that the alternator bulb and the oil lite were put in the wrong way round. Mine turned out to be the oil pressure sensor (I think thats what they call it) and not my alternator.

Hope it helps.

So you think it might be the alternator thats duff not the oil temp sensor? Think I'll get the multimeter out see whats going on.

My oil pressure light was coming on and off intermittently, particularly when cornering, I checked the level and it was not bad it only took a half litre to top up but that cured it, and it's been right ever since, I don't let the level drop much now so I would suggest that Cerbs need the oil to be kept up to the mark.
edited to add:- my oil was pretty hot, I was at the end of a 110 mile plus, drive at NSL.

It mite be worth checking. Joo suggested to me about this when I had my problem and it turned out to be the fault.
