I'm looking to buy some decent cutlery shortly to replace the set I bought initially when I bought my house 4 years ago. I'm looking to spend enough to get some cutlery that will really last well and ideally it should be of high enough quality to withstand going in the dishwasher time after time without degradation. I have no idea what to get though. The Viners stuff looks ok, but is it particularly high quality or is there better out there? Any suggestions would be much appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

I use Royal Doulton cutlery on a daily basis, it's nice quality and not outrageously expensive, also dishwasher safe. I also have a set of Wedgewood which is very nice (and expensive to buy) but not safe for the dishwasher.

The Wedgwood looks good. I'll have to find an outlet to try it first hand to see how it feels, but it looks to be the sort of thing I'm after.

Any other suggestions anyone?

I have Viners, has lasted 9 years so far, til we got a dishwasher, the knives have got odd brown spots on them, I read somewhere it's not good to put knives in a dishwasher frown

(The spots do come off again)

Stanless stuff should be good for 10+ years even if you stuff it through the dishwasher. More about finding a patern you like.

We have Viners too and was told that if you do put them in the dishwasher then you must open the door of the dishwasher as soon as it has finished washing so the water gets a chance to evaporate and and not sit on the cutlery.

I got my Viners stuff from my parents when I got my first flat, they got it when they bought their second house so it's about 38 years old and not a mark on it. Never seen a dishwasher though.

WMF I have found to be very good SS sets also.

I'm more picky on weight and balance (like a heavy handled knife and fork that I can balance across a finger) and spent ages a few years ago looking for a decent set of cutlery. Came across a 6 person set in John Lewis by WMF for around £100.

I have some Robert Welch cutlery. Has thus far lasted 8yrs with no spotting etc and gets abused.
